L.T. HALLETT, Science Editor;
Τ*Λ"ΑΝΥ of you already know of the activities of t h e Infrared Spectros copy Committee which was formed a t the Ohio State Conference on Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy. After careful planning and discussion, it has formed t h e Coblentz Society to develop particularly methods of collecting and recording infrared spectra. We asked Dr. N . Wright to bring us up to date on their activities, and lie writes as follows:
PATENT NO. î*2493
No. 3835B
It has been found that, because of the differential migration of the solutes through filter paper the maximum color density of the paper is proportional to the concentration of material. The "no drift" feature and the high sensitivity of the Densichron provide measurements of excellent repeatability with accuracies having high statistical significance. It has been successfully used for amino acids, sugars, vitamins, steroids, hormones, drugs, and an endless variety of both organic and inorganic compounds. Write for literature describing the production of papergrams and the use of the Densichron for quantitative determination by the maximum density method.

T h e enrollment of the Coblentz Society now stands at 725, and we expect this may grow to 1000 within the year. The activities of the Coblentz Society have been up to now primarily the efforts of the board to get the society started. One goal, however, has been actively pursued by the board since its formation (as the infrared committee of the Ohio State molecular conference group) in June 1953. This has been the matter of edi torial policy of certain chemical journals

(not ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY) concerning
the inclusion of infrared spectra in publica tions. The policy had been expressed by one editor as, "not to include infrared spectra merely as adjuncts to the charac terization of new compounds." More than anything else this policy brought home to the many chemists using infrared spectroscopy the need for a mechanism of concerted expression of their opinions on matters vital to the field. We are happy to report a considerable amount of success as the result of our correspondence with editors on the above subject. Another of the goals of the societj' on which some action has been taken is item 6 in the list below. A representative of the U. S. Patent Office, noting the rise in the use of infrared spectra in patent applica tions involving organic compounds, asked the AST M Subcommittee K-13 to recom mend a standard format for such spectra. T h e choice of K-13 would have been the format earlier developed by API Project 44, which unfortunately had not been sufficiently modernized to utilize the spec tra as now automatically recorded by spectrophotometers manufactured by three different companies. Members of the Coblentz Society board were able, however, to point out a more useful for mat, utilizing spectra as automatically recorded on all instruments, which has now been accepted by both ASTM and API.

METALAB offers a basic method in laboratory planning . . . called, "LABRITECTURE." This technique will assist and direct you in the modernization and expansion of your laboratory or in planning a new one. Our new 4B Catalog and Manual will give you the sound basis for solving these laboratory problems.
Matters which the Coblentz Society intends to take up immediately are listed in the formation announcement as:
