T l UMAN beings have fundamental J-J- characteristics which training and environment may modify but do not eradicate. They are the building blocks with which our lives are formed and are broadly classified as emotional or spiritual or physical. A partial list in cludes self-preservation, gregariousness, hate, fear, aggressiveness, imagina tion, power of abstraction and reason ing, love of power and prestige, inquisitiveness. These are held in some degree by everyone. According to the accepted norms, some characteristics are considered good, others are deemed undesirable and must be held in check. Those who choose the sciences for their chief interest in life must have and seriously strive to develop the ability to reason and think in abstract terms. An imagination disciplined by logic and finally by experiment accounts in large measure for the new concepts and facts about the world in which we find our selves. In our time science, and par ticularly the scientific method, has be come almost sacred, and those who practice it are looked upon as super human, and it happens too often that the successful scientist is carried away with his own success to the point where he thinks his ideas in other fields are as valid as the ideas which he has con tributed to the advancement of his specialty. Great success or ability in one field of endeavor rarely diminishes to any ex tent the weaknesses and undesirable traits of a human being, and if he allows great success to give him license to in dulge his weaknesses, his usefulness is seriously impaired. The fact that most successful men make their contribution while still young is therefore significant. Too often the rest of one's life is spent in defending and justifying one's contribu tions By this time, if you are still reading this, you must be wondering what this has to do with analytical chemists and analysis. By realizing that although some are by accident more gifted than others or in a different field, they are still subject to prejudice, error, and even self-delu sion, we can better understand why they react as they do to the results and con clusions of the analytical chemist who, of course, has his share of human frailty. Analytical chemistry strives to give exact answers to problems submitted by the scientific worker who is one member of the team. Human nature being
