Important reagent for reduction, polymerization, con densation, hydrogénation, and dehalogenatîon reactions T h i s h i g h l y reactive chemical can b e u s e d i n a wide variety of industrial proce s s e s . D e s p i t e its m a r k e d r e a c t i v i t y , it c a n h e h a n d l e d without difficulty a n d i t s reactions c a n be readily controlled. S o d i u m can also be c o n v e r t e d i n t o c o n c e n t r a t e d (40-60%) dispersions in inert m e d i a . These dispersions can h e h a n d l e d in p i p e s as fluids at r o o m temperature. T h e y allow rapid but controlled s o d i u m reactions.

Industrial Uses and Applications DYESTUFFS. S y n t h e t i c i n d i g o , c e r t a i n s e l e n i u m colors, and m a n y d y e interm e d i a t e s require sodium in their m a n u f a c t u r e . N a p h t h a l e n e used b y t h e d y e stuffs i n d u s t r y is refined w i t h s o d i u m . PHARMACEUTICALS. Barbituric acid der i v a t i v e s , such as Luminal, Veronal, and m a n y o t h e r soporifics of similar t y p e , are m a d e w i t h sodium. S o d i u m i s also used t o refine m a n y organic liquids used b y t h e pharmaceutical industry.

MISCELLANEOUS CHEMICALS. D e t e r g e n t s , w e t t i n g a g e n t s , plasticizers, resins and insecticides m a y b e manufactured w i t h s o d i u m . T h e p e r f u m e industry uses sodiu m for s y n t h e s i z i n g odoriferous materials and for refining organic liquids. PREPARATION OF SODIUM DERIVATIVES. S o d i u m h y d r i d e , s o d a m i d e , sodium alkoxides and s o d i u m acetylide are m a d e from s o d i u m . PREPARATION OF SODIUM ALLOYS. All o y s o f s o d i u m w i t h mercury, lead, t i n , zinc, c a d m i u m a n d other non-ferrous rnetals c a n b e easily prepared. I n t h e c h e m i c a l i n d u s t r y s o m e of these alloys are u s e d as c o n v e n i e n t forms in w h i c h t o feed specific a m o u n t s of sodium t o a reaction. Pulverized sodium-lead is reacted w i t h e t h y l chloride in t h e m a n u facture of l e a d t e t r a e t h y l . T h e alloys are also used in m e t a l l u r g y . METALLURGY. S o d i u m is used for t h e rem o v a l of a n t i m o n y and arsenic from l e a d - t i n a l l o y s ; it forms c o m p o u n d s w i t h
