INVESTIGATION BY ELECTRON MICR()SCOPY #BERTB. FISCHER’ AND STANLEY H. SIMONSEN, University of I l h o i s , Urbana, Ill. The niokel, palladium, and bismuth derivatives of dimethylglyoxime were systematioally investigated to determine the effects of concentration of test solution, method of precipitation, and presence of foreign ions. The electron microscope provides useful information concerning the effects of various oonditions and methods of forming precipitates, and is thereby of value in determining the optimum prooedure to be followed. The appearance of a crystal obtained in chemical microscopy should be used with extreme caution for qualitative identification because of the frequently unpredictable infloenee of various faatprs.

T

HE purpose of this investigation wm t o explore the usefulness of the electron microscope in chemical microscopy by applying i t to the observation of some metallo-organic p m cipitates. The classical methods of chemical microscopy (f) must be modified for electron microscopy because the necessity for maintaining the Specimen for the latter in a vacuum precludes the possibility of observing a precipitate in the solution from which it was formed. Gulbransen and co-worker8 (I) presented a technique for adapting the electron microscope to chemical
