Butyl Ether, Spectroquality Especially puri/ied for maximum transparency... Orig inally created to use for the Ultraviolet Spectropho tometry Determination of Blood Salicylate \ and Barbiturates 2, 3.

A pyrolyzer, consisting of a control unit and separate flash heater is de signed to aid in the chromatographic analysis of many difficult-to-handle substances. The flash unit attaches to most commercial chromatographs; flash vaporized samples are swept d i rectly into the carrier gas stream. Liquid or gaseous samples are in jected directly by syringe into a sep tum on the flash heater; solid samples are encased in a quartz tube and in serted into the heater. Provision is made for plugging a variable autotransformer into the control unit to permit adjustment of vaporization temperature from a few degrees above ambient to 1 1 0 0 ° C. ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

An instrument designed to record op tical rotary dispersion curves over the ultraviolet and visible range of the spectrum consists of a xenon arc source unit, two scanning monochromators, polarization photometer, photomultiplier detector, and a flat-bed recorder. The silica prisms of the Littrow type monochromators are controlled by a cam and lever mechanism to, give a linear wavenumber scale. The slits are controlled by a similar mechanism to maintain constant illumination of the sample at a level which can be varied in steps. The polarization unit uses two Wollaston prisms between which the specimen is located. The second prism is rotated until a null position is reached in which two of the four images formed have a minimum of in tensity. The rotation of this prism is linked mechanically to the recorder servo mechanism. Unicam Instruments Ltd., York St., Cambridge, Mass. 4 0 4
