Microscale Resolution of Racemic l-Phenylethylamine and Chiral High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) in Undergraduate Chemistry Mlroslav Krumpolc University of Illinois at Chicago Chicago, IL 60680 A standard experiment in organic laboratory courses is the resolution of racemic 1phenylethylamine by optically active L-(+Itartaric acid (1, 2). This experiment has been modified to incorporate microscale techniques (3,4) and to employ chiral highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to determine the enantiomeric purity of the resolved amines (5). The resolution of the amine (separation of enantiomers from each other) is accomplished by converting them into amixture of diastereomeric salts of tartaric acid (Fig. 1).
