be used. Because the outside 14inch casing will not have as much thermal stress, Grade X-42 steel with a 42,000-p.s.i. yield will be used. A 10,000-p.s.i. tension will be placed on the outer casing through temporary anchors at each end, before burying it. At the casing's operating temperature of 110° F., the tensile stress will be relieved. The inner lines will be heated to 225° F., allowed to expand about 35 feet, and permanently fastened to the outer casing. In normal operation then at about 300° F., the thermal stress will be compressive. The thermal and tensile stresses combined at 300° F. thus will be about 60% of the yield strength. If the inner pipelines are cooled to near the soil temperature, the thermal stress will be tension and equal to about 70% of the yield strength. Longitudinal movement of the pipelines is almost zero and no expansion joints will be needed. Freeport expects that after soil

is replaced around the pipeline, the soil resistance will prevent much appreciable movement, hence use of temporary anchors. Movement, if it occurs, would be in the section near the mine, which will be buried in clay, while the near shore section (roughly 2 miles) will be in fine sand. Work was expected to begin on the line May 1. Total cost is estimated to be $2,000,000. B.F.G.
