Morpholine Part 4, Monographs for Reagent Chemicals: General Descriptions, Specifications, and Tests eISBN: 9780841230460 Tom Tyner Chair, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents James Francis Secretary, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents

ABSTRACT This monograph for Morpholine provides, in addition to common physical constants, a general description including typical appearance, applications, change in state (approximate), aqueous solubility, density, and pKa. The monograph also details the following specifications and corresponding tests for verifying that a substance meets ACS Reagent Grade specifications including: Assay, Color (APHA), and Boiling Range.

TESTS Assay (By acid–base titrimetry). Add 0.30–0.40 mL of mixed indicator solution (described below) to 50 mL of water in a 250 mL flask, and neutralize by the dropwise addition of 0.1 N hydrochloric acid just to the disappearance of the green color. Weigh accurately about 3.0 g of the sample into the flask, and swirl to effect complete dissolution. Titrate with 1 N hydrochloric acid volumetric solution to the disappearance of the green color. One milliliter of 1.0 N hydrochloric acid corresponds to 0.04356 g of C4H9NO.

For the Assay

M i x e d I n d i c a t o r S o l u t i o n . Prepare separate 0.1% solutions of bromocresol green in methanol and the sodium salt of methyl red in water. Mix 5 parts by volume of the bromocresol green solution with 1 part of the methyl red solution.

Color (APHA) [Part 2: Measurement of Physical Properties; Color (APHA); Procedure for Color (APHA)].

Boiling Range Distill 100 mL by the method referenced in [Part 2: Measurement of Physical Properties; Boiling Point Range]. The corrected initial boiling point should not lie below 126 °C, and the corrected dry point should not be above 130 °C. The barometric pressure correction for morpholine is +0.045 °C per mm under 760 mm and –0.045 °C per mm above 760 mm. (The boiling point for pure morpholine at 760 mm mercury is 128.2 °C.)
