The Plastics Division o f t h e well-known American c h e m i c a l company. Allied Chemical Corporation, is t h e largest producer of phthalic anhydride i n t h e western hemisphere. At its El Segundo works in the near vicinity of Los Angeles, California, Allied Chemical has operated since 1963 its modern phthalic anhydride plant. T h e annual capacity is approximately 10,500 metric tons and o-xylene is used as feedstock. This plant uses the process of the Chemische Fabrik von Heyden and was constructed in cooperation with Chemiebau Dr. A. Zieren, Cologne, and Ralph M. Parsons Co. of Los Angeles.

Mr. Harry Calkins In his capacity as Product Manager of Allied Chemical's El Segundo Works, is also in charge of the operation of this plant. This plant produces a high-grade phthalic anhydride and at t h e same t i m e t h e plant meets the requirements of the Los Angeles authorities who have very strict regulations controlling air pollution. There are 24 phthalic anhydride plants in operation in all I parts of t h e world which were, or are being, erected by Chemiebau and which are using the von Heyden Process- | The output of these plants is approximately 22% of the present world capacity.

Our field of activities is comprising, planning and the construction of complete plants for the production of: I sulphuric acid sulphur dioxide I sulphuric acid/cement I (German-Democratic1 Republic process) oleum stabilized SO superphosphate phosphoric acid triple superphosphate
