Undecylenic acid is derived from castor oil, a renewable plant source. This biodegradable product, available with a purity degree of 98% minimum, has two important properties: • It is active against certain fungi and bacteria, • It is a bifunctional building block (with an acid group and a terminal double bond at the other end of the chain). In 1921, a talented perfumer and a "grande dame " of fashion known for her intuition and penchant for risk-taking decided to use this molecule in the creation of the most illustrious and timeless of fragrances. In the 1940s, this same molecule led to the development of RILSAN, ATOFINA's high-performance polyamide 11. Who knows what you might create with it in the new millennium?
