Naming Hydrocarbons Draft on hydrocarbon no menclature approved by ACS division

alkylarenesulfonates (C&EN, Oct. 2 7 , 1952, p a g e 4513.) The matter of hydrocarbon nomen clature has been under consideration b y die committee for some years. Cur rently, there is some divergence of u s age of terms relating to groups or classes of hydrocarbons.

χ HE NOMENCLATURE COMMITE of

the ACS Division of Petroleum Chem istry has unanimously approved a draft statement o n the nomenclature of hy drocarbon classes. T h e statement de fines the classes a s :

• Hydrocarbons—Compounds con taining only hydrogen and carbon. • Saturated hydrocarbons—Those hy drocarbons whose carbon atoms are joined by single bonds only, a n d in which the unshared carbon valences are fully saturated with hydrogen. • Unsaturated hydrocarbons—Hydro carbons in which two or more carbon atoms are joined by bonds other than single bonds. • Paraffinic hydrocarbons (alkanes, paraffins)—Saturated open chain hydro carbons with the type formula, CnH&ita. • Naphthenic hydrocarbons (naphthenes, cycloalkanes, cycloparaffins)Saturated hydrocarbons wriich contain at least one ring. • Olefinic hydrocarbons (olefins, alkenes )—Unsaturated hydrocarbons which contain at least one double bond which is not in an aromatic ring. • Acetylenic hydrocarbons ( acetyl enes, alkynes)—Unsaturated hydrocar bons which contain a t least one triple bond. • Aromatic hydrocarbons (arenes)Unsaturated hydrocarbons which con tain at least one benzene nucleus. • Usage. The committee also states that in the discussion of hydrocarbons, the terms "saturates" and "unsaturates" may be used as abbreviations for the longer terms "saturated hydrocarbons" and "unsaturated hydrocarbons." Par affins, naphthenes, olefins, acetylenes, aromatics may also be used as abbrevia tions for t h e corresponding terms "par affinic hydrocarbons," "naphthenic hy drocarbons," "olefinic hydrocarbons," "acetylenic hydrocarbons," and "aro matic hydrocarbons." Some com pounds may properly be referred to as belonging to more than one class. For example, styrene and indene a r e both aromatics and olefins. Further, the noun "arene" applies to all hydrocarbons containing at least onearomatic ring a n d is especially recom mended in naming derivatives such as=

Final Call for Nominations March 4 is the deadline for receipt of suggestions of members t o be nom inated for ACS offices for 1958. T h e Committee on Nominations and Elec tions a n d the Council Policy Committee hope that members will a d d more names to those already received as a result of earlier requests. All suggestions, each accompanied by a biographical sketch a n d a state ment of reasons w h y the individual is recommended, preferably using a form which will be supplied by t h e commit tee secretary, should b e sent immedi ately t o William A. Pardee, Jr., Secre tary, A C S Committee on Nominations and Elections, Gulf Research a n d D e velopment Co., P . O. Drawer 2038, Pittsburgh 30, Pa. Nothing can be a c cepted after March 4. Your coopera tion i s requested,
