National Aluminate Corporation 6216 West 66th Place, Chicago 38, I I I .

I^lational Aluminate Corporation is a rapidly expanding industrial chemical firm which was founded in 1928 to produce sodium aluminate for industrial water conditioning. Today the company operates plants in seven different locations, including one in Italy, and is recognized as the leader in the waterconditioning field. In addition to more than 100 water-treatment products, it produces a number of other chemicals such as coagulants, antifoam agents, fuel oil stabilizers, combustion catalysts, herbicides, microbiological control chemicals, corrosion inhibitors, crude oil emulsion breakers, petroleum-cracking catalysts, and a series of organic chemicals and intermediates. Products bearing the Nalco label are distributed in most of the countries of the world. Nalco's development from a watertreatment manufacturer to a diversified chemical producer has been fostered by an extensive research program that forms a firm basis for further rapid progress. Since 1947 sales volume has nearly tripled, and with the diversity of its new products and continuing development program, the company is preparing for equally rapid growth in the next 10 years.

Nalco Career Opportunities With about 125 technical and supporting personnel in laboratory research and service, and just slightly more in sales, Nalco offers an environment in which the efforts and contributions of every employee can be recognized. No one will be lost because of bigness—yet no good idea will die for lack of financing, as it might in too small a firm. The major portion of the company's research activity is conducted in modern, well-equipped, air-conditioned laboratories which are part of Nalco's general office and laboratory building at the southwest edge of Chicago. However, both the Catalyst Division, also in Chicago, and Visco Products Company, a subsidiary in Texas, operate laboratory facilities at their locations. The Research Department offers exceptional opportunities for chemists and chemical engineers to step into important research jobs and move rap(ADVERTISEMENT)

idly into project and group leadership positions, or to important positions in other divisions, as the company grows. The Nalco organization's plants—in Illinois, California, Texas, and West Virginia—offer many opportunities for men interested in production work. Mechanical, civil, electrical engineers, and chemically-trained men will find challenging jobs keeping production facilities expanding with the growing demand for the company's products. Sales personnel in the Nalco organization are men with chemical or chemical engineering backgrounds whose work often includes providing technical assistance to the customer in matters involving the application of Nalco products. The specialized knowledge they must have for Nalco sales and service work is gained through training activities in both the laboratory and the field. Career opportunities in sales and service work, created by the company's carefully planned growth situation, are available in virtually all parts of the United States.

Nalco Employee Policies Company attitudes and policies toward employees are so exceptional at Nalco that they have been cited as a model for progressive companies to follow. Believing that one of the princi-

pal aims of an employee is to build security for himself and his family, the company, in addition to paying excellent salaries, has ' established a remarkably liberal employee benefit program. For their future security, Nalco employees enjoy an exceptional retirement-income plan and a stock-profitsharing plan, both of which are noncontributory in nature. Blue Cross and Blue Shield medical plans are offered on a share-the-cost basis. A major medical insurance plan covering the employee, and his family if he so selects, helps carry the burden of costs incurred through a more serious accident or disease. In addition, Nalco provides its employees with substantial life-insurance coverage, plus special airtrip-insurance protection for traveling employees—all at company expense. The advantages of such an employee benefit program—to both the company and employee—are readily recognized, and the extent of the Nalco program makes it a particularly appealing one. The practice of paying an annual cash bonus, which has run as high as 17% of base pay, and the policy of promoting from within the organization whenever possible are further examples of Nalco attitudes and policies that help to make successful and rewarding careers at Nalco.
