physical data basic thereto. The book opens with a treatment of the theory of the formation of complex ions as ap plied to EDTA and proceeds through an explanation of the titration curves observed and the functioning of the various indicators to the strictly analyti cal applications. The latter occupy about half of the book and are given in considerable detail. A bibliography to late 1954 is included. The book is well done, as might be expected from the man who has carried out some of the most brilliant physical chemical measurements in recent years and who opened up the way for the greatest change in analytical chemistry in the last decade. The book covers the work of all those who have been pub lishing on the analytical applications of EDTA, but it is also about as excellent a summary as could be prepared to accompany a nomination for a Nobel prize.

NALGENE POLY-SYPHON

Constructed entirely from Polyethylene; chemical-resistant, safe, simple to use . . . merely insert one end in carboy or drum, squeeze flexible bulb to prime, then open spigot to dispense liquid in any quantity desired. Spigot is the well-proven Nalge No. 1292 W needle with sufficient tubing to use with 55 gallon drum. Trimming tubing to desired length fits it to smaller units.

NEW BOOKS

This volume is the latest addition to Part II of the Handbuch der analytischen Chemie dealing with qualitative ana lytical procedures. Band II treats the elements of the second periodic group with separate sections for beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, zinc, and mercury. The comprehensive nature of the Handbuch is in evidence in this book, continuing its value as a reference text. The reader is escorted in orderly fashion from the natural occurrence of these elements through the instrumental methods, dry and wet chemical methods, to the inorganic and organic analytical reactions involved in the systematic identification of this periodic group. The final part of each section contains a thorough exposition of the reactions and techniques which facilitate the identification of micro quantities of these elements. Comprehensive litera ture references conclude each section. The presentation in this volume is in keeping with the general excellence of the composite work. Use and Theory of the Analog Field Plotter. Sunshine Scientific Instru ment, 1810 Grant Ave., Philadelphia 15, Pa. 50 pages. $2.50. Methods are given for setting up and solving graphically problems involving flow patterns, potential gradients, and flux distribution, associated with highly complex shapes. ANALYTICAL
