Treatment of most of the subject matter is qualitative in nature and large sections of t h e book are devoted to the classifica tion of organic colloids into various sys tems. T h e amount of space devoted to classifications, such as the chapter on hemicolloids, mesocolloids, and emcolloids, seems out of proportion to their probable importance. Each chapter again combines a comprehensive "chemical re-views" type of article with a detailed discussion o f the experimental conditions and their effect on the reaction. Descriptions o f representa tive experimental procedures are followed by tables listing all the examples known to t h e authors. For the reader's conveni ence in further search, the date to which the literature has been surveyed is men tioned; t h e least up-to-date chapter in cludes references through 1"946 -while the most up-to-date chapter covers t h e litera ture ui? t o , and including, January 1950. Lack o f space permits little more than a mention of the 10 topics discussed in the volume: the Stobbe condensation; the Oppenauer oxidation; the halogen-metal interconversion reaction with oxganolithium compounds; reductions by lithium aluminum hydride; and t h e preparations of 3,4-dihydroisoquinolines by ifhe Bischler-Napieralski reaction, of tetrahydroisoquinolines by the Pictet-Spemgler reaction, of isoqulnolines by the Poxneranz-Fritsch reaction of phosphonic and p>hosphinic acids, of thiazoles, and of thiophenes and tetrahydrothiophenes. All o f the chapters are well written and ably fulfill the ob jectives o f the series. The three articles on the synthesis of isoquintolines and re lated compounds and the one o n the Op penauer oxidation not only tabulate the successful applications but also list un successful attempts. The chapters on t h e synthesis of thi azoles and of thiophenes and tetrahydro thiophenes are restricted to methods of preparing monocyclic compounds (i.e., fused ring compounds are not included). Furthermore, reactions involving the in troduction of a group into thefivem e m bered sulfur-containing nucleus (for ex ample, the alkylation of thiophene with an olefin) are intentionally omitted. The nomenclature, in general, follows accepted American practice. It is hoped that the hybrid name "isopropanol" (page 2 1 0 ) will not be found in succeeding volumes. It seems almost superfluous to conclude with the statement that every practicing organic chemist will want this book on his o w n bookshelf or on one to which h e has very ready access.
