World That Nature Forgot (Continued

for t h e film saw something quite different. On one color film, what was actually a gradually diminishing halo ended abruptly a short distance from the luminous balls. Colors also changed character: b l u e registered as blue, b u t green a n d yellow scarcely registered a t all. H & B t u r n e d to Technicolor, which registered the gradation well, though to get the final effect of red, orange was t h e color used. W i t h all t h e technicalities solved, Halas a n d Batchelor w e r e finally prepared to start actual production. . Exposures w e r e better than half hour per frame, a n d with t h e necessity of checking each molecule against a flow chart between exposures, "actual production," on an exceptional day,

amounted to about one foot of exposed film. In " T h e World that Nature Forgot," over a year's labor, a n d four months of production, pass b y i n a bare three minutes of film time. Thought of in those terms alone, the project may seem tainted with folly. On t h e other hand, the difference between a group's best expression and its second best is all too frequently the difference between a milestone a n d a millstone.

of aromatics, phenols, high boiling solvents, creosote oils, and pitches. One thing seems likely: n e w major producers of chemicals from coal will be appearing i n t h e next five years. One force behind them will b e coal companies anxious t o find steady markets for their r a w material. Aluminum reduction plants are particularly good for this since they draw a steady power load, in comparison to fluctuating municipal load. Thus a coal plant can count on steady production of chemicals from char. Since supplies of coal are practically unlimited, a n d those of petroleum axe not, coal will b e called on to produce 26% of liquid fuels and 5 7 % of electric power by 1975, according t o t h e President's Materials Policy Commission Report of 1952. Both of these uses a r e potential chemical by-product producers. Whether an oversupply of chemicals will result as t h e Chemical Market Research Association w a s told (C&EN, F e b . 2 0 , page 7 9 2 ) is yet to b e seen. B u t in any case, a number of companies seem to be wanting t o line u p their markets in the next few years. MARCH
