indicates the direction of future developments. Il may startle the average technical man to read the suggestion that a power plant might operate by circulating 1,630,000 lb. of sodium potassium alloy per hour through a system .it a temperature of 12,000 e F., using an electromagnetic p u m p to move the metal in a sealed system. The book contains physical data on the properties of some 20 metals and alloys. The section on the chemical properties is well written, and contains important information on the handling of these materials. The section on materials of construction is a condensation of a publication by t h e Argonne National Laboratory on "Resistanee of Materials to Attack by LiquidMetals," which lias been prepared by the authors of the original pamphlet. The chapter on liquid-metal heat transfer is written by the editor-in-chief, and contains valuable information on the c haractenstics on which most applications are based. Chapter 7 on large· scale handling of some liquid-metals will surprise most chemical engineers with t h e extent to which design and practical operation have been developed. The book opens a new field in chemical engineering which will be invaluable to chemists and engineers who are interested in heat transfer. It is unfortunate that tinbook is not available in cloth binding. Atomic Spectra. 2nd ed. K. C. JOHNSON. viii -f- 120 pages. John Wilev & Sons. Inc., 440 Fourth Ave., New York 16. N. Y. 1950 S 1.25. Hev iewed bv Hi NHY F.YKINC:. University of Utah. JL ins book should be useful to anyone seeking to learn atomic spectra. It still uses the Bohr Model with the attendant advantage in simplicity but with t h e necessity of introducing q u a n t u m m e chanical corrections ad hoc. The book gives a systematic account of all types of atomic spectra and ends with a useful account of experimental methods lor producing t h e different types of spectra. It is fine as far as it goes, b u t it will be a pity if those w h o read it stop without going on to the excellent texts which treat the subject from t h e point of view of q u a n t u m mechanics. P r o g r e s s in Coal Science. Vol. I. D. 11. Bangham, ed. xi -f 456 pages. Interscience Publishers, Inc., 250 Fifth Ave.. New York 1, X. Y. 1950. $7.00. Reviewed by H. S. Ai'vii.. U. S. Bureau of Mines. 1 Host: w h o have available copies of t h e monthly bulletin of BCURA will have limited use for this book except as a convenience, because it is largely composed of the reviews that appeared in this bulletin in t h e years from 1943—47. Some material has been d r a w n from other sources, perhaps 25r/< of t h e total.

There are 26 chapters ( p a p e r s ) ; these are by recognized workers in the particular fields covered. T h e editor has grouped these under t h e generalized headings of modern experimental techniques, fine particles, constituents of coal, organic chemistry of coal products, and chemical aspects of combustion a n d gasification. In content the individual papers range from well annotated bibliographies to short seniipopular articles on particluar apparatuses or processes. In the latter class a discussion of t h e mass spectrometer And of recent developments in gasification may be mentioned to illustrate the range covered. Certain chapters were of particular interest to the reviewer; these are not listed because every reader interested m any phase of coal technology will find one or more chapters of particular interest to him. It matters not whether t h e r e a d e r s interest is in the origin of coal, photographic techniques in combustion research, rare* constituents found in ash. explosion processes of particle size reduction, routine analysis, or in some other phase of coal technology; an up-tod a t e résumé of developments will be found, together with appropriate references for further study. Those using "Chemistry of Coal Utilization" by II. II. Lovvry will want this book on their shelves, for in many respects it serves as a later supplement to Lowry's book. Many references ( over 1,700) are given. Naturally, British sources are most commonly used for reference but the literature of other countries is not neglected.
