• What Next? Synthetic Mica is still improving its process and its prod uct, working on two fronts: • Growing bigger crystals and more of them, and then separating them from the melt by an economical method. Large crystals are now sexDarated from the cooled melt by hand picking, a time-consuming and costly method. • Developing a reconstituted mica sheet that does not use chemical bind ing agents—such as the glass now added to Supermica. Pure mica sheet has better dielectric properties than the mixture. C&EN

• Mathematical code for digital com putation of nuclear reactor design data has been worked out jointly b y Ameri can-Standard and ElectroData division oi Burroughs. The code is known as Diffusion Multigroup Multiregion ( D M M ) , and with it designer can cal culate elastic and inelastic scattering of neutrons between energy levels. • Wolverine Tube, division of Calumet & Hecla, has worked out an extrusion process for molybdenum tubing. The major barrier to this has been the high strength of molybdenum at extrusion temperatures, according to the com pany.

can be expected from American Society for Testing Materials in 1958 as a re sult of work now being done by its Committee on Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys. AST&l is organizing other groups to consider standards for beryl lium, niobium, tantalum, thorium, uranium, and hafnium metals, and molybdenum, tungsten, and titanium alloys. • Spent sulfites liquor from Flambeau Paper's Park Palls, Wise, mill is now being filtered through soil before it is sent to the Flambeau River. Liquor seeps horizontally through the soil, while soil bacteria decompose its or ganic constituents. Horizontal filtra tion, says Flambeau, minimizes plug ging of the soil by solids in the liquor.
