Professor Reisz who first introduced his ring-oven t,echnique in 1954 has writ, ten a, fascinating book describing the technique, I n this second edition he has presented chapters dealing with the appa, ratus and its use for qualitative analysis, spot colorimetry, the treatment of organic subst’ances, radiochemical appiications, the combination of the ring-oven method with other techniques, applications in va,rious fields, and the concentration of substances in the form of a straight line. The book includes a complete list of original ringoven publications together with ot,her pertinent references. Among t,he various applications of the ring-oven that are of interest are those applying to radiochemical studies, air pollution investigations, and trace analysis and toxicology. T h e book also includes a wealth of information on the separation, identification, and estimation of trace materials. This reviewer still takes issue with Professor Weka in his modest claim for eemiquantitative analyses b y means of the ring-oven. We have found that the method is remarkably accurate for the determination of microgram and na’nogram amounts of material and feel that the ring-oven is as reliable for quantitative determination of traces as are such established methods as colorimetry, polarography, and emission spectrometzy.

This book presents the most current details in the colorimetric and photometric analyses of urea and related compounds, compounds with inorganic radicals and elements, sterols, hormones, and alkaloids. Chapters 7 through 11 of Volume I V of this Series have been updated in this volume. This book provides each detail and determination of the organic and inorganic substances from basic theory to final calculations and interpretations of the results. Research chemists in industrial chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry as well as pharniacologists mho need a precise, reliable reference on the latest analytical methods will find this volume of value. This book contains both an author index and a subject index.

Micromethods for the Clinical and Biochemical Laboratory. Hermann Mat2 3 2 pages. Ann tenheimer. vii Arbor-Humphrey Science Publishers, Inc., P. 0. Box 1425, 600 S. Wagner Rd., Ann Arbor, Mich. 48106. 1970. $18.75

The use of micromethods has become more and more important for the clinical and biochemical laboratories because of the resulting savings of money, time, and space. Widely accepted macromethods have been converted t’o micromethods which require only 5 to 10 pl of sample. Dr. Mat’tenheimer also includes ultramicromethods in the book. These are used t’o determine enzyme activity in t,he nephron, and require only a fract’ion of the sample needed for microniethods from which they are adapted. The book, revised from the German, includes American methods and niicroanalytical equipment, and is designed for use in clinical chemistry as well as biochemical research.

Electrical Probes for Plasma Diagnostics. J. D. Swift and M. J. R. Schwar. 334 pages. American Elsevier ix Publishing Co., Inc., 5 2 Vanderbilt Ave., New York, N. Y. 10017. 1970. $19.50

T h e purpose of this book is to provide research workers in the field of partially ionized gases with a sufficiently comprehensive background for the successful measurenient of such plasma parameters as charge carrier concentration and temperature. The range of probe theories and practical details dealt with is much greater than in any previous publication; in fact, there is no other book concerned solely with this technique of plasma study. An advantage of the electrical probe method over other methods of plasma diagnostics is that the diagnosis can be performed using very simple apparatus The beginning of the book is concerned with the basic principles governing the motion of ions and electrons through a neutral gas in the presence of an electric field. Chapters 3 t o 8 deal with the collection of ions and electrons by a probe that is very much smaller than their mean free pat,h. “High pressure plasmas” are treated in Chapters 9 and 10. The remainder of the book i, conrerned with the more practical aspects of plasma diagnostics and deals with perturbation effects, probe measuring techniques including the use of probes under more complex conditions such as in the presence of magnetic fields and directed carrier flow, and other methods of plasma diagnostics.

This series aims to promote inforniation flow from country to country as well as among the specialists in the different branches of chromatography. I n this volume critical, current surveys of the most important advances in the respective areas of chromatography, written by noted authorities in chromatographic science, are presented. The wealth of information, even in specialized areas of chromatography, is so great that for this series, noted authors have been asked to separate the hardcore advances in each respective area from the overwhelming mass of supporting evidence and data. The authors have summarized and developed into single papers their own ideas and expressed opinions of yarious facets or trends in research, putting their subject matter in perspective. Topics presented in this volume include papers concerning: reversed-phase extraction chromatography in inorganic chemist r y ; determination of the optimum conditions t o effect a separation by gas chromatography; advances in the technology of lightly loaded glass bead columns : radiochemical separations and analyses by gas chromatography: and analysis of volatile flavor components of foods. This volume contains both an author index and a subject index.

I n a modern society more and more lvater is needed because of the rapid progress of urbanization and industrialization, but less and less water is available a t the required quality as a result of the self-destructke process of pollution. This book contains the proceedings of the Jerusalem International Conference on R a t e r Quality and Pollution Research, June 1969. The subjects dealt with and the research findings .ivhich were presented at this Conference I d 1 find application in every country of the world which shares the common problem of increasing pollution. This work comprises 20 Conference papers which are divided in three sections : water quality management ; wastewater treatment and utilization; and marine pollution.
