New Carbon Black Aids Stereo Rubbers United Carbon's 65-SPF blends readily with 100% polybutadiene rubbers, offers other advantages A new carbon black which has "out standing processing advantages" for stereo rubbers, especially polybuta diene, as well as for conventional rubbers, has been developed by United Carbon Co., Inc. Called United 65-SPF, the new oil furnace black is available in commercial quantities: United makes the black at Ivanhoe, La. Details of the process for making the black are being withheld, but some trade sources believe that the company has a new reactor design. United will not confirm this. When used in blending mixtures for tires, United 65-SPF mixes easily, quickly, and thoroughly, both in blends and in 100% polymers. These advantages come mainly from the carbon's particle size—average of 32 m^.—and especially from its structure. The structure is formed by the clustering of carbon particles, which all blacks exhibit to some degree. In United's product this clustering is spread out into a chain. The chains are longer than those found in other carbon blacks. By past experience, United has found that the longer the chains, the better the product. When used in 100% polybutadiene compounds, United 65-SPF produces a product with good wear resistance. United finds, in laboratory abrasion tests, a 40% reduction in abrasion, compared to that of 100% polybuta diene compounds containing equal amounts of HAF (high abrasion fur nace black, which is generally used in synthetic tire compounding). Although the new black does pro duce a harder rubber, United says the addition of processing oil can soften the rubber until hardness equals that of present products. And when this is done the rubber still exhibits 20% less abrasion wear than an HAF rubber. United Carbon's 65-SPF is priced at 7 1 / 2 cents per lb., compared to 7 cents per lb. for HAF. But since oil extension, necessaiy with United 65-SPF, produces a greater volume of product, the final product is less ex pensive than HAF rubber, United says. Road tests show that the new prod
uct also gives improved tread wear with styrene-butadiene stock. It gives up to 19% better -wear in SBR than does the same level of HAF. With processing oil used to produce a prod uct of equal hardness, mileage still runs 10% above that of the HAF rubber. United's 65-SPF offers processing as well as product advantages. It mixes rapidly with polybutadiene and dis perses readily and completely. Conventional mixing procedures in volve step by step additions of the various ingredients—mainly carbon black, process oil, polymer, and cura tives. United charges its mixer with the carbon black, process oil, all other ingredients except curatives, and the polymer all in one step. This can be accomplished, United says, since United 65-SPF disperses so readily. This all adds up to a shorter mixing time—as much as half—which in turn reduces power requirements, and ulti mately provides a more economical procedure. United explains that 100% poly butadiene compounds have given poor results when run through roll mills. From 70 to 75 parts HAF are needed and the roll has to be chilled to give satisfactory results. With 52.2 parts of the new black and 20 parts oil, 100% polybutadiene can be processed, with good results, on hot roll mills (up to 200° F . ) . Today there is an increasing trend toward producing blends with higher percentages of polybutadiene. At present a typical auto tire composi tion might contain 75% SBR and 25% polybutadiene. With natural rubber this ratio might be about 50:50. As more polybutadiene is added using conventional carbon blacks, wear re sistance decreases, United says. How ever with United 65-SPF, this is avoided, and in fact, abrasion resis tance increases, the company adds.
NEW CHEMICALS Casting compound for making vac uum forming molds has been devel oped by Devcon Corp., Danvers, Mass. Devcon C-2 doesn't require preheating of the resin and hardener for mixing. Its low viscosity elimi nates the formation of air bubbles or voids, Devcon adds. The compound is a combination of 80% aluminum and 20 % epoxy plastic. C1

Three new polyols for rigid urethane foams are available from Union Carbide Chemicals Co., New York, N.Y. The NIAX polyols are LS-550, LS-650, LT-550. According to the company, the NIAX polyols produce rigid urethane foams with improved dimensional stability, and because of low viscosities are easier to process. All three polyols have potential as intermediates for resins, emulsifiers, surface active agents, pharmaceuticals, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, adhesives, and plasticizers, the company adds. BRIEFS Adding cobalt to silver-cadmium oxide means longer life for electrical contacts made of the latter material. According to Texas Instruments, preliminary tests show erosion is 40% less when cobalt is added to 15% silvercadmium oxide than when conventionally oxidized 15% silver-cadmium oxide is used. The new material will be fabricated by Metals & Controls, a Texas Instruments division, and will be marketed under the trade name Ti-Cad.

Bendix has now finished distributing three new software packages for its G-20 computer to users of the system. This, Bendix says, brings major programing packages for the machine to a total of nine. The three systems distributed are ALCOM, Bendix's version of the international algebraic language ALGOL; EXECUTIVE, a master routine for administering memory location, hardware control, and the like; and PERT, the critical path method for large-scale project scheduling. New radioactivity standard sample— cobalt-57—is now being distributed by the National Bureau of Standards. The bureau is also re-issuing three previously available standards for zinc-65 and two concentrations of sodium-22. All of the standards are in solution except for zinc, which is prepared as a point source deposited on Mylar film. In addition to all the other key advantages of acrylics, Neo Cryl A-247H can give your formulation the kind of resistance to a continual pounding of dirty feet that your customers want. This has been proven in test after test. This new copolymer contributes to impressive scuff and powdering resistance. Also, it imparts the kind of clear, deep gloss that is possible because of its lightness in color. Evaluation samples and comprehensive technical data are yours for the asking. Don't you think it would be a good idea to take a look at this one right away? The rest of the industry is! Specialists in High Polymers

An electron beam irradiation service for research and commercial processing is now being offered by Radiation Materials, Inc., in New York City. Available is a 1-m.e.v., 5-kw. General Electric electron beam generator, along with conveying equipment and laboratory space for preparing samples. A means for handling acid fume removal has been devised at Hexagon Laboratories, a New York City manufacturer of pharmaceutical intermediates. Acid fumes pass up through a packed tower where they are absorbed by dilute caustic solution. At a preset pH, fresh caustic solution is added automatically to spent solution in a mixing tank. Spent solution overflows and leaves the system, and the fresh solution is pumped to the top of the tower.
Actually, the Lab-Vis measures viscosity instantly. It is a direct reading viscometer that features a patented sensing device, called a probe. This probe is immersed in the sample fluid where it vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies. Viscosity is electronically presented on a centipoise meter as a function of the "viscous drag" on the probe. The Lab-Vis may be used for routine sampling or for continuous measurement such as in liquid phase kinetics, rapid experimental blending and pilot plant monitoring. Why has the Lab-Vis been so successful in industry as well as medical research? Read these specifications: Speed: .5 sec. response Accuracy: =*=2% of full scale Range: 0-50,000 centipoises (8 ranges) 0 ration- (temperatures to 650°F. p ' (pressures from vacuum to 1000 psi Sample Volume: from 2 ml to continuous flow Readout: meter, strip chart recorder (optional) Probes: laboratory, pipeline, and medical For more information, write The Bendix Corporation, Department K-5, 3130 Wasson Road, Cincinnati 8, Ohio.
