NEW CHEMICALS AND SPECIALTIES Optical Whitening Agent For Nylon and Wool An optical whitening agent designed for use with nylon, wool, and other fine fabrics has been introduced by HiltonDavis Chemical Co., division of Sterling Drug Inc. Called Hiltamine Arctic White N, the chemical structure of the bleach permits it t o absorb invisible ultraviolet light, the energy from which is converted to visible light in the blue range of the speetrum. The product has the ability to be re tained on fabric in minute amounts, ac cording to the company. Being a directtype dyestuff, it is pointed out, it readily exhausts from very dilute solutions. On application t o white fabrics its fluorescent qualities cause an increase in the apparent whiteness of such fabrics and when used with colored materials, especially pastels, the brilliance of the shade is said to be enhanced. Paper Size Can Be Used Under Alkaline Conditions Cyron size, developed b y American Cyanamid Co., is claimed to enable the paper industry to manufacture papers pre viously considered impossible to make. The synthetic sizing material can b e fixed in t h e paper under alkaline conditions and requires no rosin, wax, or alum. It may be applied to the surfaces of rosin-sized papers for added effect. T h e company states that paper sized with Cyron is hardly affected by many alkaline materials and suggests that such paper may be used for wrapping moist soap or steel instruments, and for cement bags and labels for tin cans. Higher Fatty Alcohols Have Many Applications Stepan Chemical Co. has a line of higher fatty alcohols from tallcw and other fats and oils. The alcohols, which are called Makanols, are said to b e useful in a wide range of applications as emollients, emulsifiers, absorption bases, intermedi ates, penetrants, and thickeners. Tentative specifications for Makanols I and II are as follows: Makanol I Makanol II 6% Myristyl alcohol 69r 27% 27% Cetvl alcohol 67% Stearyl alcohol 159c 50% Oleyl alcohol 2% Linolevl alcohol 55 4 Iodine number Saponification 2 2 value 52 42 Titer Other Makanols include oleyl alcohol and alcohols from soya, fish, and linseed oils. Sulfates of Makanols are also avail able. These, Stepan says, are of particular interest for shampoos and detergents beV O L U M E

Starting Material for Peptide Synthesis Carbobenzoxy chloride (benzyl chloroformate) is offered in commercial quanti ties by Mann Research Laboratories, Inc. The compound, which comes in a mini mum purity of 99%, is the standard start ing material for the synthesis of peptide and peptide intermediates and is also used for blocking amino or hydroxvl functions. Size for Acetate Water-spotting on loom-finished taffetas is said to be eliminated with the use of Styiner LF, a durable size for solutiondyed filament acetate, according to the manufacturer, Monsanto Chemical Co. The product is a resin made soluble by ammonium hydroxide. The company says that mill tests have demonstrated the product's effectiveness in quantities similar to those recommended for tbe warp size, Stymer S. The chemical is said to be nonspotting and easy to handle. CS 5

Low Viscosity Butyrate Low-viscosity cellulose acetate butyrate is available from Eastman Chemical Prod ucts, Inc. The material has been tested for use in wood lacquers, metal finishes, and paper finishes and is said to work well in these applications. Other uses suggested include peelable plastic coatings and heatsealing adhesive coatings. The product, which Eastman terms halfsecond butyrate, can be handled safely as a dry powder in contrast to nitrate finishes which must be shipped wet with solvent.

Shank C e m e n t . A hot melt adhesive for shank cementing which i s said to pro vide immediate b o n d , high strength, im proved i m p a c t resistance, a n d low unit cost has b e e n developed b y Dewey and Almy Chemical Co. The p r o d u c t , Darex R8, is designed to attadi all types of shanks in a permanently flexible resin bond. It contains no water o r solvent and does not crystallize, t h e company states.

CS 9 Dust C o n t r o l . To aid in t h e control of dusting concrete floors, United Labora tories, Inc., has developed a product known as Transvar 266. T h e p r o d u c t is claimed t o have shown remarkable results in binding tiny dust particles together that are actually a part of the concrete surface and may b e applied by brush or mop.

CS 10 Feit Adhesives. Adhesives Products Corp. h a s developed an adhesive, FeltGrip, for applying felt to wood, metal, plastic a n d other surfaces. T h e company states that t h e product is n o t affected by temperature or humidity changes. I t can b e applied b y h a n d or machine and re quires n o heat or pressure. C S 11 T o x a p h e n e . Granular toxaphene is now offered b y Hercules Powder Co. T h e com pany believes this form appears promising for control of hitherto hard-to-kill insect pests, including several species w h i c h feed below t h e soil's surface, C S 12 Paint Vehicle. A paint vehicle called Aquasperse # 3 0 is said t o simplify t h e problems of latex paint manufacture, ac cording t o American Resinous Chemicals Corp. T h e pigment is mixed with casein to form a paste which is t h e n milled; at this point t h e latex is added. C S 13 Floor Cleaning Compound. Finely ground cellulose fiber is available as a floor sweeping compound called Cottentex. T h e product, made by Cottentex Mfg. Co., is said to absorb more t h a n eight times its own weight. C S 14 W a t e r p r o o f Coating. D a s c o Chemical Co. has a transparent silicone-base w a t e r proofing material called Dascone. T h e product is said to be free of solvents, chlorinated rubber phosphates, and butyl methacrylate. Since it is solvent free, fire hazard d u r i n g application is eliminated, the c o m p a n y claims. C S 15 P l a s t i c Insulation. Electronic e q u i p ment c a n b e protected against fire through use of a laminated plastic insulation which is self-extinguishing in one minute or less, according t o General Electric Co.'s chemi cal division. T h e paper b a s e material is designated G-E 11542 Textolite laminate and w a s developed specifically for tele vision, r a d i o , a n d other electronic compo nents w h e r e fire hazards exist.
