Heovy Liquids for Determining Specific Gravity of Solids A series of heavy liquids for determining the specific gravity of minerals, gems, and other substances by die sink-or-fioat method is announced by R. P. Cargille. The Cargille liquids now cover the range in 0.5 steps up to specific gravity of 7.5. Until now, the highest heavy liquid available has been Clericfs solu tion, composed of thallium salts, and hav ing a specific gravity of 4 at room tem perature. The increased range was ac complished by using suspensions of heavy metals dispersed in heavy liquids. This method is also applicable as a test for homogeneity and air pockets in the lighter alloys and it can be used to indicate the amount or type of filler in plastics. Cargille reports that the 22 standard heavy liquids are arranged in sets for minerals and gems, or will be furnished in any assortment. CS 2
