NEW CHEMICALS AND SPECIALTIES Copper-Based Fungicides A group of solvent-soluble, copperbased, organic fungicides is available for industrial testing from Barfair Laboratories, Inc. T h e technique used in preparing these compounds involves formation of c o m plexes with selected nitrogen containing organic compounds. It offers the convenience, of ready solubility in cheap solvents and, in addition, is said to increase t h e fungicidal power of «the compounds per unit of copper metal present. Five compounds are available for test: Barfair CPCP, a soluble, activated, copper pentachlorophenate; Barfair CPHB, a c o m panion product based on copper p-hydroxybenzoate; Barfair C D C B , copper 3 , 4 dichlorobenzoate—based homolog; Barfair C M D , a soluble, coprecipitated, copper methylene bis- disalicylate/copper pentachlorophenate in which 9 0 % of the ring structure is supplied b y methylene bisdisalicylic acid; and Barfair CAA, a solvent-solubilized, water-dispersible copper acetate. Barfair CPCP should b e useful for heavy duty wood or textile preservation, Barfair CPHB and C D C B should be of interest in white or light colored textile proofing compounds, Barfair C M D is of general interest as a rot and mildewproofer, a n d Barfair CAA may find application in t h e agricultural fungicide field. W h i t e Reinforcing Pigment Commercial quantities of Zeolex 2 0 , a white reinforcing pigment, are now available from J. M. Huber Corp.'s chemical division. Zeolex 2 0 , a calcium zeolite, has w i d e reinforcing applications in rubber a n d plastic stocks, according to Huber. It can be used as salt conditioner and carrier for high-concentrate pesticides. CS 3

Reardon Industries, Inc., is marketing a special color for use in identification concrete which is used to encase underground lines carrying e l e c trical current or liquids. By coloring the concrete encasing, the character of the lines is immediately determined by c h i p ping the concrete. CS 4 Latex Additive. Nuodex Products C o / s Cyclodex is a catalyst designed t o accelerate the curing of many latex e m u l sions. Nuodex has conducted tests indicating that Cyclotex improves adhesion of latex films and increases film toughness to resist damage or injury b y rubbing, scuffing, or marring. Latex primers containing Cyclodex are reported t o require less time before application of oil or resin t y p e top coats. T h e product is a freeflowing, water-dispersible liquid. CS 5 Drying Oil. Spencer Kellogg and Sons Research laboratories has developed Linstyrol, a drying oil based on linseed oil and styrene, which is said to eliminate t h e necessity of using an oxidized or conjugated oil in producing a styrenated oil. It has miscibility with solvents and refined drying oils and has limited miscibility with polymerized oils. CS 6

Rust Inhibitor. By dropping a Sav-ATank Cartridge into a fuel oil tank once a year all rust is completely stopped, according to Sudbury Laboratory. This cartridge neutralizes corrosion acids and deposits a protective film on the inside of t h e tank. CS 7
