NEW CHEMICALS AND SPECIALTIES Diazo-Type Chemicals A line of diazo-type chemicals, previously restricted to their own production requirements, is n o w available commercially from Azoplate Corp. Suggested uses are as sensitizers and couplers for the manufacture of coated diazo-type papers and as intermediates for organic syntheses. T h e light sensitive compounds include para-diazo derivatives of alkyl and alkoxy aniline. T h e y are furnished either as pure zinc chloride salts or mixed with appropriate stabilizers, such as thiourea and magnesium or aluminum sulfate. Also available a r e alkyl, alkyl-aryl, and alkoxy anilines, as well as the corresponding p-phenylcne diamines. In addition the company offers dihydroxy naphthalenes and benzidine-2,2'-disulfonic acid. Suggested uses for t h e latter group are as starting materials or intermediates in syntheses leading t o pharmaceuticals, detergents, a n d chemicals used in the compounding of r u b b e r and plastics. effective than C . P . glycerol in attracting moisture. This humectant, available as a water-white, viscous liquid, is said to have application in the knit goods trade, as a flame resistant treatment, and in t h e textile printing trade. CS 2
A c e t a t e Dyes Tennessee Eastman Co. has developed t h e following acetate dyes: Eastman Fast Yellow 2 R - G L F is a bright golden yellow reportedly having exceptional fastness to atmospheric gas fading, light, washing, sublimation, and perspiration. The slower exhaust rate of this dye makes it a valuable component with other dyes of the G L F series when an on-tone build-up is desirable, according to Eastman. Eastman Diazo Navy Blue RB is a dispersed acetate dye which, when diazotized and developed with BON, gives shades ot navy blue reported to have excellent fastness to light, washing, perspiration, a n d sublimation. Tear-Resistant Fabric. United States Rubber Co.'s Fiberthin is a base fabric used in the production of high tearresistant, lightweight, waterproof fabrics. It is woven of flat, ribbon-like, continuous multifilament yarns such as nylon, Orion, and rayon. It can be combined with coatings of natural rubber, synthetic rubber, or plastic. Because of its unusually high tear resistance in proportion to its weight, it has been used for many military applications, including airplane wing covers and tarpaulins. CS 4 Rust P r e v e n t i v e . Inertol Co., Inc., has developed a rust preventive known as Inertol Crease Coating. T h e biggest problem of painting submerged machinery has been the "out of service" time consumed in the actual painting job a n d in t h e drying of these paints. With Inertol Grease Coating, machinery submerged in water can be completely protected with this coating and b e back in service in two hours, according to Inertol. CS 5 Lithium G r e a s e . High resistance to breakdown is said to be one of the basic characteristics of Shell Alvania Grease, a lithium base product whose unique multipurpose properties are attributed to the use of lithium 12-hydroxy stéarate. According to Shell Oil Co., this grease withstood over a million strokes in an A.S.T.M, motorized worker test, without loss of body. Other Alvania properties a r e its high water tolerance, its broad temperature range ( achieving high pumpability and movement at low temperatures), its low rate of oxidation, long induction period, and its excellent storage stability. Eastman Printing Blue 2B is an anthraquinone type dye recommended for application printing of acetate fabrics because of the reported excellent dispersibility, resistance to sublimation, and fastness to wet processing. It produces a clear, bright blue which fixes easily on steaming. CS 3

Wall Primer. A wall primer that dries so fast it is ready for the finish coat as soon as the circuit of the room is completed has been developed by Du Pont. It dries in from 4 5 minutes to two hours, depending upon atmospheric conditions. Porous surfaces are sealed, including patch-up spots in plaster, forming a surface said to be especially suited for topcoating with flat wall finishes. This sealercoatsr is a water emulsion formulated with an odorless base material, polyvinyl acetate. It is designed for use over virtually all wall surfaces including wallboard, interior masonry such as concrete block and brick, wallpaper, and sufficiently aged plaster. It may b e tinted to light shades with water-mixable colors but not with colors in oil. CS Τ
