Water Soluble Resin
DMHF
Dimethyl Hydantoin-Formaldehyde Resin Applications AS A TEXTILE SIZE—The high water solubility, low viscosity, and excellent adhesion to both natural and synthetic fibers displayed by D M H F Resin have aroused much interest in this material as a size for weaving and knitting yarns. For example, recent tests have shown that the use of D M H F , in con junction with other materials, in single-end sizing and warp slashing of nylon gives improved results in the knitting and weaving of this important syn thetic fiber. In the formulation of sizing solutions, this resin may be used as the chief sizing ingredient or as an extender and improver for other substances, such as "Elvanol," sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, "Carbowax," gelatin, and starch. OTHER SUGGESTED
APPLICATIONS—DMHF
may find use in the sizing and coating of paper, as a modifying agent for starch and gelatin adhesives, and as a blending agent for aqueous solutions of gums and resins.

Brittle lumps.
Melting Point
Minimum, 60°C-
Hygroscoplcity Absorbs 4 - 5 % moisture in three hours when powdered and exposed to air at 26°C. and 9 6 % relative humidity. Solubility in w a t e r Dissolves readily in cold and hot water. Solutions are off low viscosity even at high solids contents. p H O f 1 0 % w a f e r solution 4-6.5. The pH can be adjusted to any point in the range of 0.5 - 10 without precipitation. Solubility in other solvents Soluble i n methanol, ethyl ace tate, methyl ethyl ketone, chloroform, methylene chloride, a n d hot glycerol. Insoluble in benzene, xylene, petroleum ether, diethyl ether, trichloroethylene, and carbon tetrachloride. Plasticizers Glycerol, triethylene glycol, etna· nol formamide, glycerol monoglycolate, and other hygroscopic agents. Five to ten per cent, based on resin weight, is ordinarily sufficient. Larger quantities off softener give tacky compositions. Compatibilities Compatible in water solution with dextrin, starch, gelatin (glue), casein, sodium starch glycolate, "Elvanol" polyvinyl alcohol, "Carbowax*' 1500, a n d sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Compatible, both in metha nol solutions and in films, with "Elvacet" polyvinyl acstate.
