MATERIALS Ion Exchange Resins More than 50 different mesh sizes and cross linkages of analytical grade ion exchange resins are now available from stock from the California Corp. for Biochemical Research. The analytical grade resins are cycled, washed, graded, and analyzed for capacity, and they are ready for use from the bottle. The company says that a series of new products is also being offered to the biochemist and organic chemist working with column chromatography. Included are newly developed chelating resins and phosphorous, phosphoric, and carboxylic acid cation exchange resins, as well as specially prepared resins for separation of amino acid mixtures as described by Hamilton and by Moore, Spackman, and Stein. Silicic acid, specifically prepared for lipid analysis, is also available, as are alkaline, neutral, and acidic analytical grade alumina of Brockmann Activity Grade I. C-l

taining 12 dispensers. The company says the product can be purchased from any hospital, laboratory, or surgical dealer. C-3 Gas Chromatography Standards A new quantitative mixture of fatty acid methyl esters has been added by Applied Science Laboratories, Inc., to its line of gas chromatography standards. The mixture, No. H-104, is composed of methyl esters of the C 14 , C 16 , C l g , C 20 , C 22 , and C 24 normal saturated fatty acids; and it is made by combining known weights of the individual highly purified esters. The company also offers six other quantitative and four qualitative mixtures. C-4

able from the Chemical and Petroleum Research Laboratory of Carnegie Institute of Technology. The compounds are cis-2-heptene and 1,3-diisopropylbenzene and are designated sample nos. 1096-5S and 1097-5S, respectively. The impurity in each sample is 0.08 ± 0.02 mole per cent, estimated from gas-hquid chromatographic measurements. This brings the total number of compounds available to 281. All API standard hydrocarbon samples are available only in units of five milliliters, sealed in vacuum in a glass ampoule with an internal vacuum break-off tip. All are priced at $65 per unit of five milliliters. C-5

Metal Indicator Snazoxs, an alphabetic designation for 7-(4-sulfo-l-naphthalazo)-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid, has been introduced by the J. T. Baker Chemical Co. The material is described as a metal indicator and chromogenic agent. C-6

Radio-Iodine Iodine-131, supplied as a solution form of radiochemically pure sodium radio-iodide, is offered by Abbott Laboratories for pharmaceutical and industrial uses. The product will not be tested for sterility or pyrogenicity, but the company says it will be low in solids concentration and will contain less than 0.01% radiochemical impurities. The material is to be shipped within three days after an order is placed and will normally be delivered anywhere in the United States by noon of the following day, according to the company. In billing the customer, no handling charge is added to the list price of the chemical, and its radioactivity is precalibrated as of noon on the day after shipment. Before ordering the material the purchaser should have acquired an AEC license for its use. C-2 Detergent Packets A dispenser containing 50 individually sealed 1 / 2 -oz. packets of Alconox is available from Alconox, Inc. Each packet is measured to make one-half gallon of the detergent for cleaning instruments, glassware, and other equipment. The dispenser, tabbed so that it can be suspended from a wall, is priced at $2.10, or $21.60 in cases con-
