CHEMICALS Mossbauer Spectroscopy Standard

A standard reference material for Mossbauer spectroscopy, NBS Stand ard No. 725, sodium nitroprusside, is available from the National Bureau of Standards Office of Standard Reference Materials. The use of this material as a standard permits the reporting of data on chemical shifts as the difference between chemical shifts of a compound and that of the proposed standard. The standard is a single crystal of disodium pentacyanonitrosoferrate dihvdrate, Na 2 [Fe(CN) 5 NO]-2H 2 0. It was selected as a standard material be cause of its chemical stability, low tem perature coefficient, narrow line width, and because of its doublet. Cost of the standard is $150. For a list of available NBS stand ards, write for NBS Misc. Publ. 260 and enclose 45 cents to Superintendent of Documents, U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C. 20402.

Hydrocarbon Standards Two new hydrocarbon standards have been purified by the American Petroleum Institute Research Project 58B. The standards are: Sample No. 1141-5S, C 7 H 14 , cis-3-heptene and Sam ple No. 1142-5S, C 14 H 14 , 1,1-diphenylethane. API standard samples of hy drocarbons are available only in units of 5 ml., each sealed in vacuum in a special glass ampoule with internal vacuum break-off tip. Price is $90 per unit. A list of the 326 compounds now available may be obtained by writ ing to Petroleum Research Laboratory, Carnegie Institute of Technologv, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213.

Glass S t a n d a r d s

Three new samples of standard glass are available from the Office of Stand ard Reference Materials, NBS Insti tute for Materials Research, Washing ton, D. C. 20234. The standards are available in 225-gram lots for $25 each. NBS No. 712 is a mixed alkali silicate glass; No. 713 is a dense barium crown 620/603 glass; and No. 714 is an alka line earth alumina silicated glass. The glasses have been calibrated for soft ening, annealing, and strain points.

Viscosity Standards

A new alloy, Matreloy, is a wrought alloy of high chromium content. Ad vantages offered by the new material include room temperature workability, corrosion resistance, and high strength. Suggested applications are in springs, laboratory apparatus, and high temper ature furnaces and instruments for cor rosive environments. Materials Re search Corp., Orangeburg, Ν. Υ. 10962. 501

Viscosity standards are available for use in checking viscometer calibrations as well as procedures used in viscosity measurements. Viscosities of all the standards are based on the National Bureau of Standards value of 1.0038 cs. for water at 68° F. Included in the standards are viscosity oil stand ards, asphalt viscosity standards, low temperature standards, kinetic energy standards, and customized standards. Cannon Instrument Co., P. O. Box 812, State College, Pa. 503

Laboratory Gases Highly purified laboratory gases are supplied in a newly designed disposable container called a Chemisphere. Ad vantages offered by this type of con tainer over small-volume gas cylinders include integral diaphragm packless valve with stainless steel diaphragms, elimination of neck leakers, self-sup porting tip-free low center of gravity, no deposit, no demurrage, and no rental charges. The following 14 gases can be supplied: oxygen, nitrogen, hydro gen, argon, helium, neon, krypton, zenon, carbon monoxide, carbon di oxide, air, cyclopropane, methane, and nitrous oxide. Lif-O-Gen, Inc., Tri angle Industrial Center, P. O. Box 302, Lumberton, N. J. 08048. 502

NMR Standard Phosphorus oxide (P 4 0 fi ) is available as a standard sample in 3 1 P nuclear magnetic resonance for finding a signal, setting up resolution, and as an external standard for referencing chemical shifts. This material is superior to phosphoric acid or trimethyl phosphite because the peak falls in a region which is con venient for chemical shift measure ments for the great majority of phos phorus compounds.
