Ion Exchange Resin
Magnesium Oxide
Samples of a chelating resin, said to be the first commercially available, can be obtained from The Dow Chemical Co. According to the company, Dowex chelating resin A-l will remove traces of heavy metals such as iron, copper, or zinc from concentrated solutions of alkali and alkaline earth metal salts. Also, alkaline earth cations may be removed from concentrated solutions of alkali metal cations. Exceptionally high selectivity makes possible the separation of many closely related ionic species, such as nickel from cobalt and copper from nickel. The resin is said to be easily regenerated by mineral acids, and to have the same stability and sphericity characteristics as Dow's other polystyrene-base ion exchange resins. C-l
A special grade of magnesium oxide powder offered by Fisher Scientific Co. is said to have exceptionally high purity, small particle size, and low reactivity. Electron photomicrographs of the M-300 electronic-grade oxide show that individual particles are under 0.1 micron in diameter. Sedimentation studies on a typical lot showed that 55% of the oxide agglomerates are less than 1.2 microns in diameter, and at least 99.5% arc under 20 microns.
Spectroscopic Rod National Carbon Co. announces new graphite spectroscopic rod designed for greater reproducibility. Test show, says National, these advantages: less deviation (improved precision of determinations) ; greater uniformity from end to end, from rod to rod; greater density and homogeneity; and better machinability. C-5 New Available Diamines A variety of new diamines has been added to those available from The Ames Laboratories, Inc. Among these are A^-methylethylenediamine, A-benzyl-A^Af'-dimethylethylenediamine, and tetramethyl-l,6-hexanediamine. Also included are several chelating agents: disalicylidene ethylenediamine, disalicyclidene propylenediamine, and di-
salicylidene-l,3-propanediamine. The chemicals, of high purity, are suggested by the company as intermediates in preparation of chelating agents, pharmaceuticals, insecticides, metal deactivators, plastic foaming and curing agents, and for other uses. In all, 12 new materials are listed. C-6
Rare Earth Oxides Two catalog sheets issued by Research Chemicals, Inc., provide a description of the rare earth oxides and ytterbium metal now available from the company. In the case of the rare earth oxides, a physical description is given which includes color, crystal structure, lattice constant, rare earthoxide interatomic distance, melting point, and density. The sheet concerning ytterbium metal lists about a dozen physical properties and gives a short discussion of corrosion resistance. C-7
Polyamino Acids Polyamino acids, a recently synthesized series of biochemicals, are now available commercially from Mann Research Laboratories, Inc. Those available include poly-L-aspartic acid, polyL-glutamic acid, poly-L-hydroxyproline, poly-L-lysine hydrochloride, poly-Llysine hydrobromide, poly-D-lysine hydrochloride, poly-L-proline, and polysarcosine. In addition to separate purchase, Mann's polyamino acid kit No. 405, which includes five of the above materials, is also available. The company says the compounds are of interest especially in protein studies, and enzyme and blood chemistry. C-3 Carbon Electrodes Carbon electrodes, made by United Carbon Products Co., are said to be expertly machined and purified to provide increased sensitivity of d.c. arch techniques with excellent reproducibility. Nine shapes are available. C-4
