DUST CONTROL

Sly Dust Filter—the heart of the Sly Dust Control System.

I N manufacturing grinding wheels, illustrated below, penetrating dust is created. But—the men don't breathe it. It is drawn into hoods at the machines, then through flexible tubes t o the Sly Dust Filter shown above, which filters —by cloth—all of the dust from the air, even the dust so fine you can't see if. This is but one instance of thousands where industry uses Sly Dust Collectors to improve working conditions, eliminate health hazards, prolong the life of machinery, reduce cleaning and

Rotary

Warburg

The American Instrument Co., Inc., has announced its rotary Warburg apparatus with pivotal shaking action. This pivotal shaking feature makes it possible for manometers to be read more easily and accurately while in motion. Manometer legs move radially, in a horizontal plane, about an axis centered between them; thus each manometer leg moves in a direction opposite to the other, causing inertia effects to be balanced and eliminating fluctuations of the liquid columns. The lateral movement of the manometer, as seen by the operator, is said to be only 0.25 mm. at maximum Mask travel. Thorough agitation of the flask's contents, since the maximum flask movement is 10 times that of the manometer legs, is also a feature. The apparatus accommodates various types of manometers, and has three selective speeds of oscillation. The amplitude of oscillation may be changed from 1 to 4 cm. in any desired Increment. Ε I

Control

A pneumatic control mechanism now in corporated into Fisher & Porter Co. flow controlling instruments features a housing consisting of a one-piece die casting so that all component parts are maintained in a positively fixed relationship to each other. The entire assembly may be removed from the control instrument for cleaning or re pair without disturbing the process, ac cording to the company. A minimum of tubing connections is said to eliminate air leakage troubles, and absolute alignment of pen and index is claimed throughout the range. Κ2

Heating

Induction and dielectric heating equip ment is being made available to industry under a rental-purchase plan. Under this plan as established by the Induction Heat ing Corp., new or used induction or dielec tric generators may be rented on a monthly basis with the option to buy at any time. A portion of rental payments may form an equity toward outright purchase. Ε3

Valve for or Acid

Viscous Solutions

The design of a valve made by WrightHall Products, Inc., for chemical and test ing laboratories is said to permit the pass ing of pulpy, viscous, or acid mixtures through the cylindrical inside passage clear C H E M I C A L

of ail obstructions and change of cross section. The opening action is described as instant. The valve is self-closing and dripless and protects the solutions from metallic contamination. A hand release gives access to the one» working part when cleaning is required. It can be installed in place of ordinary valves without alter ation of equipment. Standard fittings are used. Valve bodies are of stainless steel, Pyrex, phenolies, molded plastic, or ceramics. Ε 4

Automatic for Flow

Alarm System Indicators

Development of an automatic electric alarm system as an integral part of its line of flow indicators has been announced by the Henszey Co. An electric alarm, either light or sound, is set off when the high or low limits of flow are reached. Constant checking of indicator readings is elimi nated. The flow indicators themselves are de signed for lines of free flowing liquids in paper mills, chemical plants, petroleum refineries, milk condenseries, and similar plants. The units have only three moving parts. They may be installed in the pipe line, where they register the rate of flow from 0 to 100%. Ε 5

Turbine-Type

Pump

A turbine-type pump manufactured by the Roy E. Roth Co. for domestic and industrial applications requiring high pressures to 175 lb., speeds to 3,600 r.p.m., capacities to 150 g.p.m., and viscosities to 550 s.s.u. will handle liquids of extreme temperature variations without stalling, through use of an automatic, self-adjusting impeller. Very hot liquids can be pumped without vapor-binding, the company states. The single multivaned impeller develops high pressures in single stage construction. Both heads and impeller, available in either bronze or stainless steel, are renew able in case of wear or whenever the capacity of the pump is to be changed. Ε 6

Radiant

Heaters

High heat intensity and utilization of almost the entire infrared band are claimed for all-metal electric radiant heaters an nounced by Edwin L. Wiegand Co. Glassless and glareless, these heaters were designed for drying, baking, preheating, and dehydrating where a longer-wave in frared heat source is desired and rugged construction is preferable. The enclosed type of heating element is mounted in a rigid extruded aluminum AND

Air Filter

An electronic air filter developed by American Air Filter Co., Inc., has an inter mediate cleaning efficiency for applica tions where the efficiency o£ a mechanical filter is too low and t h a t of an electronic precipitator, unnecessarily high. The filter is basically an electronic precipitator without an ionizing u n i t and contains a collector element of electrostatically charged paper. This paper is a laminated cellulose product composed of a number of plies of porous, tissuelike sheets formed of short fibers in random arrangement. When an electrostatic charge is applied to t h e paper, the plies tend to separate and each individual fibre becomes a collecting electrode. T h e unit will continue to func tion as an air filter when de-energized. Ε 9

T h e light source has an adjustable lens system which permits narrowing down the light beam for counting very small objects. The entire counter can be installed quickly and without the help of an electrician. The same installation will count bottles or

Gas from higher source of pressure than system is admitted through needle valve at controlled rate. Portion of gas passes through Manostat into sys tem; excess gas passes through orifice opening, u p orifice tube, through stopcock plug to source of lower pressure. Controlling pressure is estab lished inside float. When pressure outside float, which communicates with system, becomes slight ly higher than controlling pressure, the sensitive float will drop, and permit excess gas to exhaust through orifice, automatically maintaining de sired pressure.
