NEW EQUIPMENT Multistation Thermocouple G a g e An inexpensive v a c u u m gage in multi station form for coaters, dehydrators, vacuum furnaces, a n d other industrial high vacuum equipment has been an nounced by Distillation Products I n d u s tries, a division of E a s t m a n Kodak Co. Known as the T h e r m o c o u p l e Gage» T y p e TG-09, it is available with t w o , three, four, five, or six stations, all reading on α single meter. According to the com pany, it is simple to use, requiring only that t h e operator t u r n it o n and read t h e pressure. Range covered is from a few microns to 1 mm. H g . I t is said t h a t more than half the range of t h e indicat ing needle is devoted to t h e region below 60 microns. The smallest meter division represents 5 microns; 100O microns is the highest numerical v a l u e indicated. The gage, DPI believes, will b e well suited for checking p u m p operating con ditions because of its expanded scale in the region of diffusion p u m p forepressures. They say it is sturdy, easily portable, and convenient for displaying continuous read ings of pressure a t a distance from the point of measurement. N o h a r m results from operation at full atmospheric pres sure. Ε \

Diffusion Pumps Optical Film Engineering Co. has d e Mgned a line of diffusion p u m p s which they say may be a d a p t e d to various types of high vacuum evaporators for coating .md metallizing; electronic e q u i p m e n t , electron microscopes and electron diffrac tion units, vacuum furnaces, a n d e q u i p ment requiring h i g h vacuum down to 5 χ I0r* mm. The pumps feature an increased n u m b e r of aluminum jets -with casings of seamless steel tubing, according t o t h e manufac turer. Ε 2

Flame Failure Safeguard Combustion Control Corp. announces a series of Fireye flame failure safeguards and programming controls. Series F P controls offer a photoelectric flame failure safeguard which c a n "see" all types of flames—gas, oil, pulverized coal—and pro tect against the h a z a r d of explosion. The company explains that the scanner of Fireye FP systems is t h e Firetron tube, a photoconductive cell which "sees" flames a n d gives instantaneous and positive re sponse to flame failure. C o m p a c t , Firetron scanner is installed in a short length of 0.5-in. standard p i p e located w h e r e its sensitive cell can scan t h e flame area. This simple scanner replaces both flame rod a n d photoelectric scanner, reducing installation and servicing problems to an absolute minimum. 3850

tend in response as high as '7000 A. are available. Although the long w a v e limit extends into t h e red, the p e a k response is still in the ultraviolet, they say. T h e cathodes are constructed of brass and copper. T h e manufacturer points out that counter of this type should b e of par ticular use in spectroscopic researches. Ε 5

Flexible, Plastic Tubing Firetron scanner coupled with Fireye programming control monitors t h e firing cycle from preignition p u r g e through postfire purge; checks the pilot and the estab lishment of the main flame; then stands guard throughout t h e complete firing p e riod. Its failsafe circuits prevent opera tion under unsafe conditions and cause immediate shutdown in t h e event of com ponent failure. Response to flame failure is positive and instantaneous, t h e com pany claims. Ε 3

G a g e for Measurement O f Dry Film Coatings T h e Gardner Laboratory has designed a gage which they say is self-contained, re quiring no outside source of power. Re sults obtained with t h e G a r d n e r G a g e are independent of t h e composition or thick ness of the base on which the coating is being measured, and there are no limita tions as to the edge effect in making measurements on small laboratory panels, according to t h e designers. T h e only r e quirement is t h a t t h e base on w h i c h t h e coating is applied must be electrically conductive. Plastic sheets and t h e sheet like materials can b e measured w i t h t h e same ease a n d accuracy as attached coat ings. Company engineers point out t h a t read ings can b e m a d e on curved surfaces as low as 5 in. in radius w i t h o u t introducing more than 0.10 mil error. T h e y say t h e instrument is simple to operate, a n d that it is possible to make several accurate readings each minute. According to t h e manufacturer, t h e ga^e is so constructed t h a t there are n o delicate components to get out of order or which require frequent adjustment. It is relatively small a n d light in weight a n d is well suited for production control p u r poses, they claim. T h e body of t h e gage is fabricated from solid aluminum. Ε 4

Photon Counter Nuclear Research Corp. offers a p h o t o n counter for special researches. These counters, because of a special t r e a t m e n t , are said to have w i d e spectral response. Company engineers recommend that for good response on the interval 2000 t o 4300 Α., counters of zinc cathode material should be used, as they are sufficiently sensitive in the blue to detect light scin tillations from alpha and beta rays on Nal-Tl. According to the manufacturer, specially treated custom-made counters which ex CHEMICAL

Couse & Bolten Co. offers a clear, flexible, plastic tubing which is not inflam mable and which may be steam sterilized. It is known as Alanol tubing a n d is avail able in three formulations: Μ 7 7 , for labo ratory, hospital, and surgical use; L 2 5 1 , for general laboratory use w h e r e high resistance to alkalies and acids is required; and Β 609, for beverages a n d food prod ucts, as it is nontoxic, tasteless, and odor less. T h e manufacturer claims that Alanol is unaffected by any food p r o d u c t ; will not absorb flavors, scale, form deposits, craze, or check. T h e y point o u t t h a t t h e tubing is tough, highly resistant to abra sion, and has a hard, smooth plastic sur face that is easy to clean. It is flexible, and may be bent and run at an angle or on a curve. Company engineers say that Alanol can be used to handle chemical solutions, and does not become hard or brittle with use. It does not chemically deteriorate with use or age. Ε 6

Centrifugal Pump T h e Bell & Gossett Co. is offering to t h e chemical, process, food, a n d other indus tries a small centrifugal p u m p with all wetted parts constructed of T y p e 3 1 6 stainless steel. T y p e 316 is similar to the regular line of Β & G series 1522 centrif ugal pumps, including a leakproof mechanical "Teflon" seal, standard motor, hydraulically balanced impeller, and spring-type flexible coupling, according to t h e manufacturer. Ε 7

Air-Fuel Controller Leeds & Northrup Co. has designed an instrument that is a component of their integrated control of t e m p e r a t u r e , draft, a n d combustion of large fuel-fired furnaces a n d kilns. It is designated air-fuel ratio controller, and is claimed t o adjust air flow to fuel flow changes rapidly and without cycling. Applicable to oil or gas firing, or to dual fuel furnaces, it meters both fuel and air flow for accuracy of control. Company engineers claim that speed and sensitivity are obtained with full sta bility through the use of a control cir cuit. They say, also, that major subassem blies are standardized a n d readily re placeable. The manufacturer points out the economy which results from the fact that when used with electrically actuated inte grated control, both the t e m p e r a t u r e conAND

trol and air fuel ratio control utilize the same type of plug in electronic control chasses; and when air actuated control is used, the same type of pneumatic system is built into the pyrometer and ratio con trollers. T h e company says the controller comes in a single instrument case which fits into standard panel cutouts. Ratio range ex tends from 5 0 % deficiency to 100% excess air. Direct remote control of air flow, and transfer from manual to automatic control are provided on the front of the instru ment. Ε 8

T h e Whiting Corp. has developed a system for eradication of all visible smoke and fume and the collection of large quan tities of light, gray colored, fine powdery substance in industrial plant machine hoppers below the bags. Such material, which when emitted to the atmosphere, is too fine to settle out and so forms a part of the smog blanket that overhangs the communities in t h e vicinity of manufac turing plants. Company engineers claim that their b a g type collector takes care of this situation in a satisfactory manner. According to the manufacturer, the Whiting suppressor is not restricted to cupolas alone. It can h e applied to other troublesome dust and fume problems, and should b e of interest to operators of metal lurgical plants, chemical processing plants, and other types of manufacturing activity where dust emission is a public nuisance. Multiple Assembly Relief Valves Assemblies, consisting of two or three McDonnel Series 3 3 safety relief valves, have been developed for safeguarding larger hot water heating 'boilers from ex cessive pressure. McDonnel & Miller, Inc., the manufac turer, advises that two or three smaller valves with small size orifices are prefer able to larger orifice valves of equal ca pacity because the use of smaller valves circumvents the objectionable excessive discharge characterizing large-orifice re lief valves. T h e s e valves meet t h e requirement of the ASME boiler code recommendations for equipping hot water heating boilers with relief valves. According to the ASME rating, the two-valve assembly, No. 233, a n d the three-valve assembly, No. 333, h a v e total discharge capacities of 496,700 and 769,400 B.t.u. per hr., respectively. C o m p a n y engineers point out that with these assemblies, when the boiler pres-. sure reaches 30 lb./sq. in., only one valve opens and opens only enough to take care of normal thermal expansion. If, how ever, a "runaway" firing condition occurs, causing a steaming and excess pressure condition, t h e two or three valves open in progressive succession, providing full rated discharge capacity of the assembly.
