Beryllium Windows for X-Ray Tubes Beryllium windows which, though opaque to light, are more transparent t o certain kinds of x-rays than glass, are used in x-ray tubes and are helping to speed t h e tests on materials used in bombers and i n other war machines. In these tests t h e arrangement of atoms is studied and determined by the diffraction patterns o f the x-rays. Because the absorption of x-rays b y beryllium is unusually l o w , this metal is ideal for transmitting t h e long rays used in many diffraction studies.
