Three Nickel HORTONCLAD s p h e r e s being shipped by their manufacturer, Chicago Bridge & Iron Company, Birmingham, Alabama. The spheres are used in processing PCla to m a k e t r i c r e s y l p h o s p h a t e . ("Hortonclad" is a registered trademark of the Chicago Bridge & I r o n Cotaapany.)

New Nickel-Clad spheres help step up PCI3 production for gasoline a d d i t i v e I n the last three years, youVe heard a lot about tricresyl phosphate. Once used chiefly as a plasticizer for various resins, it has won fame in a new sphere. I t is being added t o gasoline to prevent build-up of carbon deposits in the engine. PCI3 in a n e w sphere, too Tricresyl phosphate is made with phosphorus trichloride or one of t h e other chlorides of phosphorus. To process PC1 3 , a large chemical manufacturer has now installed t h e three nickel H O R T O N C L A D s p h e r e s shown above. B y the Hortonclad method, solid nickel plates were integrally and continuously bonded to heavy steel backing by a special highvacuum process, using a non-ferrous alloy intermediate layer.

Nickel protects spheres from corrosion . . . assures long equipment life. Nickel protects P C I 3 from contamination by corrosion products. And tricresyl phosphate itself is frequently distilled in nickel equipment. If you handle acid chlorides . . . if you produce t h e m . . . ship them . . . use them . .. let Inco's Corrosion Engineering Section help you investigate Nickel and Monel* nickel-copper alloy. D a t a on hundreds of applications in acid chloride environments may help you avoid serious loss. Write today...let us know t h e nature Of yOUr problem.
