New patterns in chemistry with General Mills FATTY NITROGENS Example: Fatty Diamines as Petroleum Additives Superior surface activity of the Fatty Diamine salts and their reaction products is the key to the effectiveness of these Fatty Nitrogens as petroleum additives. The polar nitrogen groups of these chemicals associate with water or with metal surfaces while the non-polar hydrocarbon chain associates with the petroleum product: H+ H4n * KM ISM i m i m i * , I I R*-NHCH2CH2CH 2 NH2

*(R = l o n g h y d r o c a r b o n chains derived from tallow and coconut fatty acids.)

In fuel and diesel oils, Diamines are used to accomplish anti-sedimentation and anti-oxidation and provide color

stabilization, corrosion inhibition and detergency. Derivatives of the Diamines prevent accumulation of ice in automobile fuel lines and on the carburetor throttle plate through the formation of a water repellent film on the metal surface. Many of the fatty monoamines are also effective petroleum additives. Fatty Nitrogens contribute many other specific properties to chemical compounds t h a t improve their utilization.
