replaced its soda ash and sodium sesqui carbonate plant at Bartlett. Calif., with completely new and more efficient fa cilities. Soda ash capacity of the new plant is three times that of the unit it replaces. Haw material for the plant is a saturated liquor drawn from wells sunk 6 or 7 feet helow the dried up surface of nearby Owens Lake. This liquor contains principally soda ash. sodium chloride, sodium sulfate, and some borax. Clear liquor is carbonated in tall towers under carefully controlled con ditions to give- a slurry of sodium sesqui carbonate. Carbon dioxide for this step comes partially from the calcining operation and partially from scrubbed stack gases from the oil-fired boilers. Separation of the sesquicarbonate crystals is followed by washing to re move adhering mother liquor, and care ful drying to produce a technical grade of white sesquicarbonate crystals—sold by Columbia-Southern under the name of Pacific Crystals. The remaining sesquicarbonate and anv sodium bicarbonate that has been

formed in the process arc then con verted to soda ash by high temperature calcining. This soda ash is then fur ther refined by a process developed by Columbia-Southern, which isn't saying what the process is. T h e result ing product, says the company, is a high-density soda ash which is freeflowing, dustless, and uniform. Raw material for the plant appears to he inexhaustible. Beneath the dried sin face» of Owens Lake (located be tween Mt. \Vhitnc\ and Death Valleyhighest and lowest points in continen tal U. S.) is a tremendous reservoir of liquor saturated with salts. Soda ash goes principally into glass, chemicals, detergents, and mineral processing. Sodium sesquicarhonate finds its largest markets in cleaning and water softening compounds.

• Foote Mineral expects it will have to cut back on production of lithium hy droxide next summer. Reason: Ship ments to AEC should be completed by May 1. and industrial markets, though growing, do not yet justify capacity operation. Foote has been supplying lithium h> dioxide to the AEC for several \ ears, but the commission at present does not plan to negotiate for further supplies when present con tracts expire, says Foote chairman Gordon H. Chambers. Nevertheless,
