Nuclear counting system w i t h automatic sample changer

Shown for the first time at the A C S Chemical Exposition held April 2 4 , 1968, in San Francisco, Calif., the Hewlett-Packard nuclear counting systems feature ultra-low background (0.1 count per minute). 1 million counts per minute range with I % counting loss, I20 sample holders in a choice of sizes, gas-flow or scintillation detectors, crnd easy system expansion and conversion. Model 5.5604 automatic sample changer holds 12 magazines with 1 0 samples each. Magazines can be removed and immediately replaced in nine of the magazine positiorzs at any time, even during operation. A lock-in feature prevents the holders from falling out, no matter what position the magazine is held in. Magazines have numbered compartments for each sample holder, minimizing cimbigriity concerning the sample number of a given holder. Empty holder or magazine positions are automatically passed ol'er, so that it is not necessary to have a holder in every position. For special combinations of instruments or for special uses or expanded capability, Hewletf-Packard offers a variety of other modules which interface with the nuclear counters. Model H P -1116 is a general p~irpose computer which interfaces with the company's digital data output instruments. I t is supported by a f i l l 1 set of ,soft+iare including F O R T R A N , A L G O L , and BASIC conipilers. Model H P 2547A coupler accepts parallel BCD information for serial transmission to card punches, tape punches, typeIt,riters, arid magnetic tape recorders. Also available are the 5584A dual timing pickoff, 5 5 8 0 4 N I M power supply, 5 5 8 5 4 fast coincidence, 5582A linear amplifier, 5 5 8 3 4 single channel analyzer, 55904 scaler-timer, and a variety o f other accessories, including blank filler panels for a console look. and stationery supplies. m Long established as an ideal specific G L C detector and total constituent analyzer, the Dohrmann Microcoulometric Titrating System now becomes more useful than ever in trace elemental analysis. New methodology now permits determination of total organic or inorganic nitrogen in Lvater or oxygenated hydrocarbons. . . in minutes. . . with a mininium of sample preparation. This technique consists of pyrolysis of the nitrogen-containing sample to ammonia over a nickel catalyst, specific scrubbing and automatic titration. The Dohrmann System is modular in concept to provide the flexibility needed for this and a variety of other specific analyses. Sensitivity of one nanogram allows analysis of nitrogen, sulfur and halogen containing cornpounds down to the 0.1 ppm level. Absolute specificity is achieved by use of interchangeable selective titration cells. The Dohrmann Nitrogen Analyzer for total nitrogen in ii'ater is particularly suited for water quality control, industrial effluent monitoring. and as a replacement for most Kjeldahl determinations.
