CHEMICALS AND MATERIALS ACETYLATEDMONOGLYCERIDES. Distilled acetylated monoglycerides available in semicommercial quantities in two forms: as easily emulsified white solid and as clear liquid which is miscible with castor oil and with alcohol-water mixtures. Materials are not greasy and can be used in cosmetics. Distillation Products Industries (Myvacets). 1 ACRYLIC EMULSION.Emulsion forms films having reduced tackiness and improved hardness and resistance t o penetration by water and organic solvents. Clear films are impervious to grease and resistant to discoloration and embrittle ment. They do not dissolve in toluene. Material may be thickened with nonionic agents and blended with other acrylic emulsions. Solids content is 45%. Rohm & Haas Co. (Rhoplez X-61). 2

ACRYLICEMULSION.Material produces films of unusual hardness and having high resistance to penetration by water and aliphatic solvents. Clear films are hard, brittle, and resistant to crazing and aging. Does not form continuous film when unmodified, although continuous films can be obtained by blending with softer emulsions. Available in a ueous form with pH of about 10 and s&ds content of 38%. Rohm & Haas Co. (Rhoplez B-85). 3 ALUMINUM,POROUS. Porous aluminum and aluminum alloys made by powder metallurgy process now available with uniform pore sizes ranging from 5 to 150 microns. Available in experimental quantities from Micro Metallic Corp. 4

CELLULOSEACETATEBUTYRATE. Halfsecond butyrate now available in powder form-composed of 80% cellulose acetate butyrate and 20% triphenyl phosphate-for heat-sealing applications on paper, wood, cloth, and similar porous materials. Eastman Chemical Products, Inc. 5 CHELATINGAGENT. Sequestering agent is said to show powerful ferric iron chelating power in addition to alkaline earth chelatin action. Hart Products Corp. (Kalex &). 6 CHLORINATED POLYMER. Nonhygroscopio plastic material is machineable, has good dimensional stability and is resistant to many alkalies, acids, and organic chemicals a t temperatures to boiling. CLADMETALS. New high vacuum brazing method for eladding a wide variety of metals for corrosive service provides an integral and continuous bonded cladding of uniform thickness and with a joint of high strength. Clad metal can he fabricated by usual methods of hot or cold working, including rolling, bending, welding, and pressing. Chicago Bridge & Iron Co. (Hortonclnd). 8

FLUOROCARBON POLYMERDISPERSIONS. Kel-F plastic dispersions can be applied to a variety of metallic and nonmetallic surfaces by spraying, dipping, or spreading t o provide corrosion resistance. Coatings are resistant to temperatures of nearly 400' F. and to abrasion, have low permeability to moisture and other liquids, have high impact resistance, and are nontoxic. Coatings are baked a t temperatures of 480' and 520' F., then quenched. The M. W. Kellogg Co. 15

COATINGS, NEOPRENE. Seoprene protective paint can be applied to metal, wood, or ceramic surfaces to form continuous, oil- and chemical-resistant rubber film with good adhesion to coated surface. Paint is flexible and shock resistant. Adhesive Products Corp. (Apco). 9 COATINGS FOR

THERMAL INSULATION.

Nonflammable protective coating for thermal insulation is compounded from neoprene and silicone rubbers and is resistant to weathering, moisture, oils, solvents, and other corrosive materials. ,4vailable in two grades: for use with magnesia, calcium silicate, felt, rock wool and asbestos or for such low temperature insulations as cork, foamed plastic, glass fibers, and cellular glass. West Chester Chemical Co. (Lagz). 10 CRACKINGCATALYSTS. Two new petroleum cracking catalysts available. One is material containing %yoalumina and said to have high attrition resistance purity, and uniformity. Other is low density product with good stability of surface area, pore volume, and activity, a s well as high attrition resistance. Davison Chemical Co. 11 CURING AGENT FOR EPOXY RESINS. Liquid curing agent for use with epoxy resins is claimed to combine the ease of handling of conventional liquid polyamines with the good performance properties of solid polyamine wring agents. Can be used in casting, potting, laminating, and adhesive applications where chemical resistance, high heat distortion point, and good electrical properties are desired. Shell Chemical Corp. ELASTOMER.Acrylate elastomer resists a wide range of petroleum and synthetic hydraulic fluids and can be used for packings in hydraulic systems. Elastomer is also resistant to ozone. It can be fabrjcated with conventional rubber processing equipment. Monsanto 13 Chemical Co. (Vyram).

LEAD-PLASTIC COMPOUND. Plastic compound containing up to 95% lead by weight can be precision molded into various shapes. Material is suitable for use as shielding for radioactive substances. Telectro Industries Corp. (Leadcast). 16 NYLONPLASTIC.Material available in granular, pellet, and liquid form is said to have high strength, toughness, and resistance to abrasion. Can be used as an adhepive, fiber binder, hydrocarbon barrier in rubber products, or paper coating. Can also be used as plastic sheeting or molding powder, or to bind pigments to textiles. PIPESEALING COMPOUND. Teflon pipe thread sealing compound is recommended for pipes carrying acids, alkalies, and solvents. Material is chemically inert and can be used a t temperatures from -150" F. to 500" F. The Gilbreth Co. 19 PIPE WRAP TAPE. Pressure-sensitive, polyvinyl chloride tape for pipeline corrosion prevention can be applied satisfactorily a t temperatures as low as 0' F. Available in thicknesses of 10 mils for wrapping fittings and 20 mils for straight sun wrapping. Adhesive on tape is formulated with corrosion inhibitor. Minnesota Mining and Mfg. Co. PLASTICIZERS, FIRERETARDANT. Stable tris(b-chloroethyl) phosphate is claimed to provide good fire retardant properties when used as plasticizer in a variety of molded and extruded plastics and surface coatings, including polyesters, vinyl resins, cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, nitrocellulose, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, and others. Celanese Corp. of America (CelluJlex CEF). 24 POLYESTERRESINS. Light-stabilized polyester resins are designed to minimize color fading and maintain favorable light transmission under direct sunlight in structural panels of reinforced plastic. Resins have good resistance to weathering, cracking, and most chemicals. Bakelite Co. (PLLB-6008 Natural). 43 POLYETHYLENE WAX. Low molecular weight polyethylene is offered as small pellets and is available in emulsifiable or nonemulsifiable forms for use in selfpolishing emulsion waxes, ,paste polishes, melt coatings for packaging, and other wax products. Material is compatible with many other commonly used wax materials. Eastman Chemical Products Inc. (Epolene). 44 STYRENE RESINS. Modified styrene polymers are water soluble, even in presence of large cation concentrations, but are insoluble in most organic solvents. Solutions show no appreciable changes in viscosity over pH range of 1 to 12.
