ZINC RESIN COATING

Organic zinc resin coating system originally developed for use by NASA to protect elements i n Saturn launches against damaging effects of sun, salt, atmosphere, wind, sand, and moisture at Cape Kennedy are available for use in the chemical industry. T h e coating material, designated Zinodic-0, is a zinc-rich dispersion in a chemically resistant organic resin, which dries to form an impact and abrasion-resistant finish suitable for pipelines exposed to stringent environmental conditions. T h e coating resin is self-curing and its high zinc content provides cathodic protection to steel surfaces. I t is applied i n a single coat and requires no premixing. Koppers Co. 401

SI L I CON E SUR FACTANT

Application of a small amount of silicone surfactant, Dow Corning 202-R, helps to provide high strength and “k” factor in a sprayon rigid urethane foam used to insulate buildings, chemical tanks on barges, and truck bodies. Experience shows that the extremely fine cell structure obtained plays a significant role in enhancing urethane foam performance. Dow Corning Corp. 402

TEFLON-LINED TUBING

By lining rubber tubing with Teflon, you may combine the outstanding physical and chemical properties of the fluorocarbon with the elasticity of the rubber substrate. T h e lined tubing, desig nated Penntube, may be used in many applications where rubber is damaged by corrosive chemicals or where rubber causes contamination of the process stream as in food processing. Penntube is recommended for transfer of solvents, paint, food products, pharmaceuti-

cals, dairy products, slurries, and waste streams. I t also has possible application as a sheath for electronic cabling to be exposed to severely corrosive environments. Pennsylvania Fluorocarbon Co.

403 POLYCARBONATE SHEET

Recently announced was the availability of Lexan polycarbonate sheet identified as Series 9500 sheet. This improved forming grade exhibits virtually no sag in the forming temperature range of 3405 to 400° F. and less tendency toward webbing and bridging than occurs with other such materials. Genera1 Electric Co. 404

ELECTRICAL GRADE POLYPROPYLENE

Underwriters Laboratory has authorized application of the manufacturer’s Grade 2356 polypropylene for continuous use in electrical equipment u p to 9 5 O C. Improvements in the formulation permitted the new rating of this material and its application in a wide range of new electrical products. Avisun Corp. 405

SHOCK M I T I G A T I N G FOAM

Polyurethane foams for shock mitigation under conditions that require precise compression characteristics have been developed by the Missile Launching and Handling Department of Westinghouse Marine Division. T h e new shock mitigation system, which can be modified for different applications by the addition or deletion of frangible layers, fulfills the requirements for isolation of heavy loads. Inherent nonlinear stress and strain properties and high compressibility of the foam render it an extremely compact and efficient shock mount. 406 Westinghouse Co.

A complete line of vinyl film laminating adhesives, called Vy-Lok, has been developed by the manufacturer. Field tests show that adhesive systems based on Vy-Loli a n d water or solvent can be successfully used with all known wood substrates, laminating processes, and coating equipment. National Starch and Chemical Co. 407 CAST COBALT BASE ALLOY

Optimized combination of tensile, creep, a n d Stress rupture properties was the objective reached with the development of the cobalt base alloy, Mar-31 509, for high temperature applications. Strength and oxidation tests performed with this new alloy confirm its applicability for temperatures u p to 2000" F. Newly available commercial biodegradable surfactant, T r i t o n DF12, is described by the manufacturer as a modified polyethoxylated straight chain alcohol. It is recommended for use in rinse-aid and mechanical dish-washing detergents, spray metal cleaning formulations, a n d low-foam detergent products. R o h m a n d Haas Co. 409 ELECT R I CAL I NSU LAT ION

Age hardening and embrittlement of conventional polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, and te trafluoroethane insulating materials are problems now solved with the development of a silicone rubber that remains pliable even after extended exposure to temperatures u p to 500" F. T h e new material, designated Silastic S-2254, not only remains pliable, but also withstands corona. Dow Corning Corp. 410 LITERATURE

Contact Angle, Wettability, and Adhesion ADVANCES IN CHEMISTRY SERIES 43 contains t w e n t y s i x papers given at t h e 1963 Kendall Award Symposium. This is t h e largest and best collection of up-to:date papers giving both theoretical and practical approaches t o wettability and adhesion-a subject important t o many areas of science and technology. Papers report the latest work, survey progress, and suggest new directions for research and application. Moreover, t h e papers are sufficiently current and broad in scope so as t o include thought-provoking, controversal points of view. I n a sense this book is a tribute t o the fundamental work of W. A. Zisman, 1963 recipient of t h e Kendall Award, who opens t h e symposium with a 48page article which includes 107 references t o other work. Some papers deal with t h e chemical structure of solid surfaces, solid-fluid interfacial tensions, and flow in capillaries as related t o contact angle discussed in other papers. Still others explore adhesion theories, thermodynamics of wettability, chemisorption, coadsorption on metals, spreading of oils o n surfaces and its prevention, a computer study of wettability, and other areas.

We're making a

federal case

The case for PLIOLITE@ paint resins is based on Federal Specifications TT-P0097A, TT-P-91, TT-P-28C, TT-P-618, TTP-00800, TT-P-1150, TT-P-00110 andTTP-95a. These specifications put the official stamp of approval on the following binder resins PLIOLITES-5, a styrene-butadiene copolymer, qualifies for use in masonry paints (TT-P-O097A), concrete floor enamel (TT-P-91) and in paint designed to withstand temperatures to 1200°F (TTP-28C). Also in a fast-drying zinc chromate primer for exposed metal surfaces (TT-P-618).

. ..

PLIOLITEVTL, low-viscosity vinyl-toluene/ butadiene resin, and PLIOLITES-5 meet the specification for a curing membrane which prevents too rapid drying of poured concrete (TT-P-00800). And VTL is also proposed as a binder for traffic marking paint (TT-P-1150). PLIOLITE VT, a slightly higher viscosity version of VTL, makes the grade along with PLIOLITE S-5 for paint used to obliterate traffic stripes (TT-P-00110). And P LIOLITEAC,styrene/acrylate resin, satisfies requirements for protection against water and chemical attack in swimming pool finishes. (TT-P-95a). Tough, chemically inert PLiOLITE resins

GOoD,,$EAR

have proven their durability in paint for over 15 years, in all parts of the country. And in the toughest tests described in Federal Specifications. For more information on PLIOLITEresins, send the coupon. Then render your verdict.
