A midget centrifugal pump for handling liquids where capacity require ments range from 0 to 6 gallons per

may be so timed and timing may be started and stopped by independent voltages. The unit may be started and stopped by either positive or negative pulses by means of polarity-selecting toggle switches. Attenuators permit selection of amplitude of start and stop voltages at optimum level for elimination of interference. The length of time that the digital reading is displayed can be controlled either manually or automatically up to a maximum of 5 seconds. The unit consists of a 1-megacycle crystal oscillator, input circuits, an electronic gate, and six decimal counting units. The first event or voltage opens the electronic gate and passes the 1-megacycle time base signal to the first of the cascaded counting units. The second event closes this electronic gate and the time interval between the two events is then displayed in direct decimal form in increments of 1 microsecond. 4

versatility in spectral range, resolution, and recording speed are required, and are made available by means of appro priate accessories. Two features have largely determined the form of the instrument: the use of an evacuated light path, which can lead to considerable improvements in speed and precision in double-beam operation but necessitates somewhat unconven tional mechanical design, and the selfcontained trolley mounting of the com plete instrument. Other features in clude an automatic prism and wave length cam change. 5 Methyl Toluenesulfonate

Methyl toluenesulfonate, a methylating agent in dyestuff manufacture, is available for the first time in commercial quantities from Monsanto Chemical Co. The product, a methyl ester of a highortho, low-para mixture of toluenesulfonic acid, is more stable than methyl paratoluenesulfonate for which it is a replacement. I t also has been suggested as a catalyst in the preparation of alkyd resins and other organic esters, and in the manufac ture of photographic chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates. 6 Environmental Tester

Murphy & Miller, Inc., has recently introduced an altitude simulation cham ber designed for accurate testing of materials and equipment under all externally im posed conditions of heat, cold, moisture, and vacuum. Heavy duty electronic control ρ circuits with automatic safety interlocks facili tate fast operation. Two heavy duty hermetically sealed compressors, assem bled into a cascade-type refrigeration sys-

tem, operate through all-welded copper cooling-coil circuits for maximum operat ing performance. A high capacity, low velocity, two-speed fan system is used to maintain uniform temperatures and conditions of extreme altitude. A reinforced-plate steel strength shell sur rounding the test chamber provides a large insulating area and increases the efficiency of the instrument. 7 Chemicals for Counting A series of high purity fluorescent chemicals, useful in the field of scintilla tion counting, is currently being offered by Pilot Chemicals, Inc. Some of these fluors are used in solution, others are incorporated in plastics, and others can be grown into large single crystals. Among the materials being offered are diphenylhexatriene, tetraphenylbutadiene, and quaterphenyl. 8 Butenediol Genera] Aniline & Film Corp.'s development program on high pressure acetylene derivatives has yielded a new unsaturated glycol, 2-butene-l,4-diol, now available in limited quantities. Butenediol is a reactive chemical intermediate which cyclizes to dihydrofuran, hydroxylates to erythritol, and forms a variety of unsaturated poly esters and alkyds. It also reacts with dibasic acids to form plasticizers and takes part in other reactions typical of compounds with hydroxyl groups and the carbon-carbon double bond. 9 Cqrbobenzoxy Chloride Heretofore it has been a disagreeable task to synthesize carbobenzoxy chlo ride (benzyl chloroformate) since it in volved the use of phosgene. Mann Re search Laboratories, Inc., has eliminated this task by offering this chemical on a commercial scale for the first time. This reagent is the standard starting materia] for the synthesis of peptide and

peptide intermediates and is also used for blocking amino or hydroxyl functions generally. Carbobenzoxy chloride is offered in minimum purity of 99% and is shipped in 100-, 250-, 500-, and 1000-gram con tainers. 10 Hand Polariscope A hand polariscope for use in the laboratory and factory for the detection of strains in glass and plastics is being supplied by the Pacific Transducer Corp.

The instrument provides a ready means of checking for strains in chemi cal glassware, for determination of the axes in crystal formations, and for detec tion of strains in clear plastics and in glass-to-metal seals. The polariscope is made with an oxidized nonrusting metal frame. The polarizer is fixed in one end of the frame. The analyzer is rotatable through 180° in the other end of the frame. There is a 3.25-inch space between ends for the object under examination. Any source of moderate intensity light is sufficient for the detection of strains in glass and clear plastic, and the inspection of glass molds and seals. The filters are made of 3-inch scratch-resistant Polaroid. 11 Organic Chemicals Distillation Products Industries, a division of Eastman Kodak Co., has announced the following new organic chemicals: 3-amino-l-propanol (m.p. 9.5° to 10.5° C ) ; 1,2,3,4-butanetetra(Continued on page 36 A)

Blue M Electric Co. is offering a Magni-Whirl water bath that eliminates the need for stirrers or circulating sys tems. Gentle agitation in all areas of the liquid mass irrespective of how

heavily the bath is loaded with test specimens is accomplished by means of an automatic self-timing electromagnet below the bottom wall of the bath which periodically pulls the flexible circulator plate (perforated) up and down. This built-in automatic stirrer and circulat ing system automatically maintains temperatures from ambient to 100° C. throughout the water mass to within ±0.25° C. An additional feature of this self-con tained water bath is an automatic dual Microtrol which selects and repeats the two most frequently used temperatures. A power-selector switch allows auto matic selection of the proper wattage in relation to the desired temperatures. 13 A u t o m a t i c G r a p h Followers

Logistics Research, Inc., has developed a new automatic graph follower which consists of a combination of digital plotter and the necessary photoelectric and electronic components for following curves and converting the data into elec trical impulses automatically. The en tire ensemble is built into a compact cabinet and serves as a combination input and output device for digital com puting equipment, in addition to other uses. Operating as an output device, it will plot any two variables against one an other, each electrical impulse received causing an incremental movement of the pen. As a follower, it will handle any

continuous function, including those which have infinite slopes. The follower has two general modes of operation. It will either follow the curve at a maximum rate and deliver electrical impulses corresponding to incremental movements on both axes, or it will allow motion on one axis to be externally controlled. In this latter mode of operation, incremental changes along one axis are fed from an external source, and the automatic follower pro duces electrical impulses to correspond with resulting motion on the other axis. Logistics Research has expressed willingness to examine particular require ments for automatic plotting or follow ing and to recommend how this equip ment be used to greatest advantage. 14

one 350-watt element on rheostat which also has an off position. The rheostat controls 150 to 350 watts, giving a full range from 150 to 550 watts without overloading. The single heat model provides 700 watts. 16 Inspection Lamp

Ultra-Violct Products, Inc., has de signed a high-intensity, long wave Mineralight for use as a portable, black light inspection lamp. This 100-watt lamp throws a powerful directional beam

Deuteroparaffin

Deuteroparafïin, a target material for use in cyclotrons, Van de Graaff generators, and other nuclear particle accelerators, is now commercially available for the first time from Tracerlab, Inc. When bombarded with accelerated deuterons, the new material becomes a relatively inexpensive neutron source. It is available as a pure white powder that melts at about 110° to 120° C. and resolidifies to a hard sheet. It has a guaranteed deuterium to hydrogen ratio of 99 and its formula is CD 3 (CD 2 )„CD 3 where η is approximately 100. 15 Heater

Labline, Inc., has a Speedi-Heet duplex heater incorporating a new reflec tor type heating r-iiss element with a nickel rod core and Nichrome heating coils ca pable of develop ing maximum heat in 15 sec onds, and of cool ing to black heat in 7 seconds. A removable sup port rod provides an easy method of mounting apparatus on the heater or fastening the heater to a setup frame. The heater is 5 inches wide X 5 inches deep X 9 inches high. The heater is available in three types : powerstat controlled, rheostat con trolled, and single heat. The powerstatcontrolled model has one 350-watt ele ment controlled by an on-off switch and another controlled by a Powerstat trans former. I t provides stopless control from 0 to 700 watts. The rheostatcontrolled model has one 200-watt ele ment controlled by an on-off switch and

of long wave (3660 A.) ultraviolet light up to 30 feet away. The lamp is useful for detecting oil leaks in machinery or on fabrics because, under activation by ultraviolet light, the slightest trace of oil emits a bright glow. In combination with invisible fluorescent inks, dyes, or powders, the lamp can also be used for the determination of flaws, adulteration, decay, or contamination, and for the detection of improper coverage of pro tective coatings. In addition to oil, various types of decay bacteria fluoresce naturally without additives. The lamp is made of light weight, high tensile strength spun metal. The hood and base fully enclose bulb and transformer. The radiation is noninjurious. 17 Eye Sweep

Genera] Scientific Equipment Co.'s eye sweep is a useful unit of first aid wherever industrial accidents occur, and especially where there is exposure to fly ing metallic fragments or magnetic attraction. One end of the instrument is fitted with a magnet for removing steel splinters while the other is fitted with a flexible loop for removing cinders, dust, and other particles. Sterilization of the instrument will not diminish mag netic qualities nor affect the loop. 18 Automatic Washing Machine
