NEW PRODUCTS FOR ANALYSTS Equipment, Apparatus, Instruments, Reagents, Materials Unitized Bath System

A tailor-made constant temperature bath may be assembled by selecting any of a number of bath jars, heaters, cooling coils, stirrers, and thermoregulators supplied by Fisher Scientific. For example, the analyti cal chemist, depending upon refractive index measure ments to control the com position of vitamin D fish oil concentrates, can add a" small pump and a few feet of rubber tubing to circulate con stant temperature water from a unitized bath through a refractometer. JJ4| There are three borosilicate glass jars available 12 inches in diameter and 12, 18, and 24 inches in height and with capacities of 4.5, 7.5, and 10 gallons, respectively. Any one of the cylinders can be set on the same heavy cast-metal base. The jar and base constitute the fundamental bath assembly, to which other units are added as needed. 1 Portable C 0 2 indicator

Instrument Engineering Service has developed a portable gas analyzer for measurement of carbon dioxide which can be used in samples containing nitrogen, hydrogen, methane, and varying amounts of other common gases. The instrument is completely self-contained in a 10 X 10 X 10 inch cabinet and weighs only 12 pounds. It uses the thermal conductivity method of analysis, whereby a hot wire suspended in the measuring gas is used to detect a change in composition. However, this cell is of the differential type and the measurement is made before and after passing through a carbon dioxide absorber. The readings are made on a 4inch meter with a 1% accuracy, within 45 seconds. 2 •Be.cz Αίίκύγζθϊ National Research Corp. has developed a vacuum fusion gas analysis apparatus which has a sensitivity of 1 part in 10,000,000. A wide variety of ferrous and nonferrous pure metals and alloys including titanium, molybdenum, stainless

steels, high temperature alloys, and electronic alloys can be quantitatively analyzed for total oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen content. The system is housed in a stainless steel cabinet and is furnished complete with mechanical and diffusion pumps, mercury, furnace assembly, and built-in control panel. 3 Vibrometer

A pocket-sized instrument for accurately measuring the speed and amplitude of vibration on machinery where vibra tion is produced intentionally to aid materials movement is being supplied by Martin Engineering Co. The Vibra-Tak is 6.25 inches long and has a movable tuning slide that indicates on a number scale the speed of vibration. To operate the instrument the bullet nose is placed against the vibrating object and the tuning slide moved up and down the scale until the wire reed, which extends out of the nose as the slide is moved, reaches the maximum throw. Multiplying the scale reading by 1000 gives the vibration in cj^cles per minute, or shaft speed in revolutions per minute. The arc through which the reed throws is in direct proportion to amplitude. It has a range of 2000 to 15,000 cycles per minute but higher speeds register and can be closely estimated. 4 Hysteresis Brake

An improved hysteresis brake that holds constant tension on yarn, wire, etc., by magnetic drag instead of friction has been announced by the General Electric Co. The brake consists of Alnico mag nets so designed and mounted that a magnetic drag (or hysteresis effect) offers a restraining force on a pullej^. This force is essentially constant at all speeds and can be adjusted by turning the calibrated head mounted above the pulley. The restraining force of the magnets ensures minimum abrasion on the yarn because the material is always in contact with the revolving pulley and is not rubbed or drawn over the surface. The brake reverses the direction of rotation a few degrees

ANALYTICAL after stopping, thereby holding stalled tension. Inertia of the brake itself is slight enough that yarn does not become , unthreaded during quick acceleration and deceleration. Construction of the brake permits operational speeds up to 700 yards per minute while tension control ranges from 3.5 to 10.5 grams. S Stopcock Adapters Introduction of micro-sized adapters for stopcocks of 2-mm. bore or less completes Emil Greiner's line of stopcock adapters which are now available for labora tory stopcocks of any size. The adapter consists of an internal adjustable clamp made of corrosionresistant spring brass, nickel plated, which grasps the stopcock plug and to which is fastened an aluminum screw. Fitting around this clamp is an aluminum barrel which rests against the shell of the stop cock. A beryllium bronze coil spring fits around the alumi num, screw and two aluminum nuts are used to fix the com pression in the spring against the aluminum barrel. An aluminum washer is used on the small sized stopcocks. 6 Purifier V. D. Anderson Co. is offering a purifier unit which removes moisture, dirt, and other obstructions from steam, air, gas, and vapor lines. The purifier is compact and performs automati cally without any moving parts or baffle plates. It removes the entrainment through a stationary centrifugal separating element. The entrainment-laden vapor en tering the purifier is engaged by this element which imparts a carefully controlled but rapid rotational motion to the vapor. This action throws all solids and water outward to the walls of the purifier from whence it is ejected to the drain. The entire action occurs without appreciable drop in pressure. 7 Filter Pump A new series of filter pumps designed and constructed to produce sparkling clear filtration of acid or alkaline solutions has been added to Sethco's line of corrosion-resistant filter ing equipment. The new pumps are self-priming turbine models with automatic controls which include magnetic starter, stainless steel pressure switch, and stainless bourdon

gage. The motor stops automatically when the filter as sembly becomes loaded with impurities. Filtering capacity of the pumps is from 1000 to 2500 gallons per hour. 8 Moisture Register This instrument, manufactured by the Moisture Register Co., was designed for testing moisture content in oil-bearing materials. It utilizes a radio-frequency power absorption circuit, permitting 1-minute moisture testing. The sample to be tested is placed in a plastic cylinder and lowered into a chrome-plated electrode chamber. No volume or weight measurement of the sample is necessary. Read ings are taken directly from the 4.5-inch rectangular milliammeter. A selector switch provides three separate mois ture ranges. The instrument is completely self-contained within a steel case and weighs 9 pounds. 9 Precision Metering Pump A new line of Maisch metering pumps for metering small volumes of liquid accurately and dependably has been intro..,. duced by Central Scientific Co. The line includes many different capaci ties ranging from 0 to 3.6 gallons per minute. The design of the pump permits metering with accurate control vol ume over a range from 0 ml. per second to maximum capacity and thus can effectively accomplish dispensing of hot or cold, viscous or nonviscous liquid such as soaps, oils, liquid fats, grease, wax, and glue. A patented external seal for the pump drive shaft prevents contamination within the pump from outside sources. Liquids that must be protected from the atmosphere may be circulated freely in a completely sealed system. 10 Temperature-Humidity Chambers A standard line of five basic environmental test chamber types has been developed by Tenney Engineering, Inc. These chambers automatically maintain humidity from 20 to 95% through a temperature range of 35° to 185° F. Mini mum dew point is 33° F. The chambers have the following inside dimensions: (1) 22 X 19 X 48 inches, (2) 42 X 18 X 48 inches, (3) 36 X 31 X 36 inches, (4) 42 X 24 X 48 inches, and (5) 48 X 24 X 48 inches. Common to all£models are accurately calibrated

An all-metal floating thermometer constructed of stainless steel and equipped with an unbreakable window can be obtained from the Weston Electrical Instrument Corp. The scale has bold, legible markings to permit quick readings while the thermometer floats. The accuracy is ± 1 ° F. over the entire scale of 50° to 150° F. The stem length is 5 inches. Other ranges and special types can be provided. 12 Torque Balance

This precision torque balance is manufactured in Holland and is being distributed in this country by the Ohaus Scale Corp. I t incorporates a patented torsion system which eliminates mechanical axle friction and is particularly - ;i t suitable for use where a large number of accurate weighings must be done. The rapidity of weighing is increased by a special damping device which does not affect the sensitivity of the balance. Models are available in capacities ranging from 1 mg. to 20 grams with sensitivities ranging from 0.002 to 0.02 mg. 13 Extruded Tubing

Ethylene Chemical Corp. is now producing extruded tubing in the following range of sizes: outside diameters, Vie to 2 inches; inside diameters, Vie to l 7 /s inches; and wall thicknesses as low as Vie inch. The tubing is of good concentricity, is almost perfectly round and straight. Control of inside and outside diameters is such that tolerances of 0.005 inch can be achieved. The tubing is also of uniform and continuous density. 14 Colorimeter

A large-area color and color difference meter has been completed by the Gardner Laboratory. I t was designed _____ primarily for the measurement of the color of fabric samples which have undergone various treatments and which are colored in a nonuniform manner. The exposure area is 9 X 12 inches. Ill The colorimeter is equipped with special niters which may be used to eliminate any ultraviolet radiation from the tungsten light source. In addition, a special ultraviolet source is included which can be used to accentuate the effects of fluorescent dyes, as well as a special measuring circuit for reading blue reflectance. 15 Peptide Intermediates

Peptide intermediates are now available for the first time on a commercial scale from Mann Research Laboratories, Inc. Since the number of such possible formation is so great that it is impossible to prepare all in advance, Mann will prepare intermediates to order. 16 Drafting Board

A new type of drafting board that is so constructed as to cause the rule to parallel itself automatically at any position from top to bottom has been designed by the Bradford Bailey Co.

33 A The board is made of light-weight, pressed wood boardT with hard finished and treated surface and can be used on drafting table or desk, or can be carried about. A simple strong cord and riveted pulley arrangement operates the paralleling wood rule that is provided with a straight edge. An added feature is a plastic indicator that moves from left to right on the scale accurately measuring the amount of parallel movement. 17 Diminutive Transformer

United Transformer Co. has announced the smallest hermetic transformers ever made. These transformers cover the entire range of audio requirements for subminiature equipment and include input, interstage, and output transformers, as well as a reactor. The over-all case dimensions of these units are Va X u /ie X 29/32 inch and they weigh 0.8 ounce. The use of special nickel-iron alloy laminations and fine wire windings on nylon bobbin makes possible this extreme miniaturization. Mounting is effected through a single-threaded stud arrangement with case tabs to prevent twisting. 18 Electric Ring Heaters

Electric ring heaters which can be used for both space and contact units for assembly into hot plates, pots, vulcanizers, molds, dies, water heaters, or for distillation equipment are being offered by the Vulcan Electric Co. There are six standard sizes ranging from 2 inches outside diameter, 1/i inch thick; 5 to 6 inches diameter, /ie inch thick. For temperatures up to 750° F., there is a ring in rust-resistant steel sheath; for temperatures up to 1200° F., in stainless steel sheath. Both are supplied in either 115 or 230 volts, or in special voltages on order. Except for the smallest size, the units can be had in threeheat construction. 19 Protective Gloves

The Pioneer Rubber Co. has developed a liquid-tight glove made of an impermeable compound which affords protection against poison gas and germs and also is resistant to damage from oils, acids, and caustics. The gloves have a nonslip grip surface which assures a firm hold on wet slippery objects. They are available in a variety of weights and styles, each designed for a specific job. 20 Paper Electrophoresis Equipment

A unit which permits analysis of charged particles— e.g., proteins, amino acids, amines, etc.—by the paper electro^ phoresis method has been designed by LKD-Produkter Fabriksaktiebolag. It consists of an electrophoresis apparatus and a power supply. The apparatus allows a maximum of 12 samples to be run simultaneously, either on two filter paper sheets, 196 by 430 mm., or on a corresponding number of narrower strips—e.g., 12 strips 30 by 430 mm. each. That part of the paper in which the samples migrate is enclosed in a tight compartment formed by two plane glass plates and a rubber gasket. Disturbing evaporation of water from the paper is thus effectively prevented. The power supply is provided with an input transformer for connection to 110, 127, 220, or 240 volts a.c, 50 to 60

34A cycles. It contains main switch and pilot lamp, selenium transformer, 0 to 10 ma. and 0 to 50 ma., with selector switch, coarse and fine adjustment potentiometers, and timer 0 to 12 hours, wTith short-circuiting switch. The maximum output is 50 ma. at 275 volts. 21 Time Delay Relay This moving coil, permanent magnet type relay offers ad justable time delays for many ranges of voltage and current, both alternating and direct. The dial is calibrated directly in delay in seconds. The timing is adjusted by hand setting a pointer to the time indicated on the dial. Full scale ranges of less than 10 seconds can be furnished by Assembly Products, Inc. Timing is relatively unaffected by changes in temperature or barometric pressure. Delay action results from the mag netic drag inherent in sensitive microammeters. Contacts are self-locking and rated at 5 ma., 100 volts d.c. for one mil lion operations. 22
