T h e inclined rotor puiiip, developed in Germany and just introduced in the United States, comes in two different models with opposite slurry handling characteristics. According to Dorr-Oliver Inc., which Tvill make and sell the centrifugal pump in the U. S., the pumps are self-cleaning, clog-proof, and troublefree. Model RS is designed to pump anything that flows, without damage to the pump or the material. Model ZZQ, on the other hand, acts to break rip oversize material in the process stream by working as a disintegrator as well as a pump. PUMP DESIGN For both units the impeller is a flat disk mounted at an oblique angle on the end of the pump shaft. Rotation of the disk produces centrifugal action without restricting the flow.. I n Model RS, which has a plain rotor and a smooth-bore casing, pump will 58

handle nearly any material that \vi11 flow through the piping. Delicate solids and seinisolids can be p i m p e d without damage; and heavy slurries, high densit), pulps, fibers, or high viscosity materials flow easily through the pump. With Model ZZQ, where the periphery of the rotor is serrated Ivith sawlike teeth Tvhich rotate in concentric groves of a removable casing liner, any dense, fibrous, or oversize material is caught u p and disintegrated before being discharged. Impeller teeth cut across the interior of the casing mice during each revolution ol the shaft. AVAILABLE SIZES AND PRICES

Inclined rotor pumps come .ivith smooth rotor and bore in four standard sizes and with serrated rotor and liner in three. Standard capacities range u p to 1200 gallons per minute against 10-foot water head. Rase prices on Model RS

Chemicals and Materials improved Stainless Steel New version of Type 410 stainless steel provides improved hardness control in final tempering and improved mechanical properties. Patented alloy, Armco 410 Cb, was developed primarily to reduce sensitivity of standard Type 410 to the tempering operation. T h e new material has better high temperature strength, low temperature impact properties, and transverse impact strength than standard Type 410. Corrosion resistance is equal to Type 410. Armco 410 Cb meets all existing society and government specifications applicable to standard Type 410 stainless steel. Dept. IEC, Armco Steel Corp., Middletown, Ohio 301

Flame Retardant Epoxy An epoxy casting resin with exceptional fire retardant properties has been developed. Stycast 1467 exhibited negligible burning after 30-second ignition in 10 consecutive test cycles, using standard procedures. Material is low in vis-

cosity and lends itself to void-filling applications. Thermal utility ranges from -100" F. to +300" F. Adhesion to metals, ceramics, and other plastics is said to be excellent. Dept. IEC, Emerson 6 Cuming, Znc., Canton, Mass. 302

Organic Cationic Coagulant Ucar resin C-149, cationic organic coagulant and flocculant, is offered in development quantities. Because of unusual composition, resin retains desirable properties of high cationic charge and high molecular weight without sacrificing ease of dissolution in water. Ucar C-149 has been highly effective in conditioning municipal sewage sludges, a n d tests indicate effectiveness in coagulation of industrial slurry systems such as aqueous suspensions of ore, clay, silica, and carbon. Following plant trials now in progress, Ucar C-149 will be available commercially. Results to date show it is highly effective at low dosage levels, compared to standard inorganic coagulant systems. Resin promotes rapid agglomeration of colloids into stable flocs and increases vacuum filtration rates. It is water-soluble, requires no special handling precautions, is effective over p H range from 3 to 8, has low order of corrosivity, and does not add ash to filtered solids. Dept. IEC, Union Carbide Chemicals Co., 270 Park Ave., N e w York 17, N . Y . 303

High Performance Graphite High density graphite is now available in standard rod sizes u p to 10 inches in outside diameter and standard tubes to 4 inches inside diameter. Larger sizes are available on special order. Originally developed for rocket engine

blast tubes, nuclear reflector and moderator elements, and high temperature furnaces, Graph-I-Tite is impermeable to liquids and gases under pressure. Operating temperatures range from -400" F. to +5700° F. Material is not affected by most corrosives and is not wetted by molten metals. It resists thermal shock and erosion. High performance properties often provide desired performance in one critical property, while exceeding other application requirements at the same time. Dept. ZEC, Graphite Specialties Corp., Sanborn, N . Y .

3 04 N-Hydroxymethylphthalimide Research and development quantities of N-hydroxymethylphthalimide are now available. Instruments Process Gas Analyzer Analyzer designed to fill the gap

Air Oxidation Process Analyzer Process analyzer measures a n d records simultaneously both oxygen a n d combustibles in off-gases from oxidation processes of either open flame or catalytic type in chemical, petroleum, ceramics, waste disposal, and paper industries. Bailey analyzer is designed for monitoring a n d controlling process variables to produce more uniform product. It has sensitivity of 0.05% by volume and response time of 10 seconds. I t detects cause rather than result of system upset so that it responds much faster than other indices such as reactor temperature or pressure. Analyzer is available as continuous oxygen analyzer, total combustibles analyzer, and combination oxygen-combustibles analyzer with both measurements in same case. Additional equipment can be provided to produce, o n a single chart, a continuous record of CO, a n d H, so that one device provides a complete analysis with the nitrogen measurement being obtained by difference. Approximate cost of analyzer is $15000 to $3000, depending o n application requirements. Dept. IEC, Bailey Meter Go., 1050 Ivanhoe R d . , Cleveland 10, Ohio 401

Aufomatic Batcher T h e Atronic Batcher electronically controls flow and delivery of measured amounts of ingredients into a common vat. Measured quantities of u p to 10 different ingredients selected at random from a total of 18 available ingredients can be delivered to the mixing vessel. Accuracy is said to be k 2 % of full scale. Instrument is available in many different ranges. Prices start at $718, and maker says most applications d o not require additional features which add to cost. Dept. IEC, Thernzco Instrument Corp., LaPorte, I n d . 403 console counts flowmeter signals u n til prearranged amount is metered. Comparison recognition signal, generated when the predetermined amount is reached, stops flow of that particular ingredient and opens valve for next ingredient. Built-in time delay can be set to provide u p to 15 minutes for mixing or settling before adding next ingredient. Other features are alarm system which warns of malfunctions and memory system which selectively purges only those lines which have been in use. First installation of the Atronic Batcher was at Du Pont’s Parlin, N. J., plant for paint production. Price range is $10,000 to $30,000 depending on applications, systems, and processes involved.
