INSTRUMENTATION ICP-OES The Optima 3100,3200, and 3300 ICP-OES instruments are based on the Optima 3000. Each system is available in radially viewed, axially viewed, and dually viewed configurations. The upper wavelength limit of each system's UV detector has been extended from 375 nm to 403 nm by enlarging the detector. New subarrays have been added, and previous subarrays have been enlarged to provide an enhanced wavelength set. The 3100 is a single-detector version of the 3000. The 3200, also a single-detector version, uses a modified optical system that determines visible range elements at their optimum wavelength without a second detector. The 3300 is a dual-detector instrument with an optical system that offers simultaneous measurement and UV-vis coverage. Perkin-Elmer • 408 Evaporators The S-Evap (solvent) and N-Evap and Multivap (nitrogen) series of evaporators are benchtop apparatus designed to be used in a hood. The S-Evap has six models that can handle 5-8 samples at a time and can accommodate 125-1000 mL flasks. The SEvap uses either a shallow water bath for round flasks or a deep bath for Kuderna216 A
and retrieves spent capsule sinkers. When used with the VanKel 7(KK) dissolution apparatus, up to eight batches can run unattended. The system preheats and conditions the dissolution media, fills each vessel with the appropriate volume of media, verifies temperature, starts the dissolution test, removes sample aliquots at user-defined time intervals, and empties and cleans each vessel before starting another run. Samples can either be stored for off-line analysis or analyzed on-line with a spectrophotometer. Zymark • 409
Danish flasks. The N-Evap and Multivap has six models that can handle 6-100 samples at a time and can hold test tubes, vials, Erlenmeyers, and centrifuge tubes. Nitrogen or air can be used as the evaporative agent, and a water bath provides heat. Organomation Associates • 410 PAD The model 300 photoacoustic detector can handle macro- or microsamples; operate in diffuse reflectance, absorbance, and transmittance modes; and be used in all FTIR instruments. Microphone nominal sensitivity is 50 mV/Pa, mirror focusing factor is 2:1, the gain range is 2-10,000 in 12 steps, ,nd maximum sample size is 10 mm in diameter x 8 mm in height. The 300 ii sompatible with qualitative and quantitative FTIR applications software. MTEC • 411 Water analysis The APA 6000 process analyzer continuously monitors clean or dirty water and measures alkalinity, ammonia, low-range hardness or nitrate, and combined ammonianitrate. The AquaTrend Interface allows users to remotely control and monitor up to eight APA 6000s. Grab samples can be taken without interrupting water flow. Hach 1 4 1 2

GC/MS The SprinT benchtop GC/MS acquires fullscan mass spectra at rates of up to 100 kHz. A digital signal processor handles data on theflyand stores spectra at rates of up to 100/s. HD Technologies 413 LC detector The DDW-10 LC detector provides simultaneous absorbance information from two selected wavelengths. The double-beam optical system consists of a continuum energy source (deuterium for UV operation, tungsten for visible operation), beam-shaping optics, dual pathlength flowcell, a broadspectrum beamsplitter, two wavelengthselection filters, and two dual-channel UVvis silicon photodiodes. The detector comes standard for 214-nm and 280-nm operation, and other wavelengths in the UV-vis range can be accommodated. D-Star Instruments 414 Karl Fischer The model 758 Karl Fischer titrator displays a real-time titration curve, stores up to 100 methods, controls up to two additional model 685 titrating burets, and measures sample moisture from 10 ppm to 100% to performing a direct or back titration widi drift compensation. SPE manifolds The Spe-ed Mate-30 manifold holds up to 30 standard or large-reservoir cartridges and is available in stainless steel or shatterproof acrylic. The Spe-ed Mate-10 holds up to 10 cartridges and is available in stainless steel or acrylic. Glass manifolds are available in 12-, 16-, and 24position sizes. Accessories include collection racks for elution into various containers; luer-fitted needles in different sizes, lengths, and materials; and stopcocks. An inert polymer coating is available for stainless steel manifolds used in corrosive environments. Applied Separations • 416
Olfactroscopy The AromaScan is based on a 32 conductingpolymer sensor array that creates a pattern of the volatiles that can be examined visually or presented to an artificial neural network for characterization. The A32/50S Multisampler, which accommodates up to 50 samples, controls headspace parameters such as equilibration time, temperature, and humidity. The A32/8S LabStation accommodates up to eight single-use disposable 750-mL sample pouches, which can accommodate solid, liquid, gaseous, and powder samples. Samples can be stored in
a temperature-controlled conditioning cabinet (4-35 °C) so that the effect of temperature on the product's aroma can be measured. AromaScan • 418
Raman The Solution 633 dispersive CCD Raman system uses an external 633-nm, 40-W HeNe laser as the excitation source. The Solution 852 uses an internal 852-nm, 150-mW frequency-stabilized diode laser. These systems feature fiber-optic coupling between the laser, the remote mini-epiprobe, and the f/2 imaging spectrograph. D e t e c t i o n Limit • 419

The SOC-100 hemispherical directional reflectometer, when coupled to the Nicolet 550/750 FTIR, provides polarized, angular diffusereflectance measurements for incident angles of 10-80° for the entire spectral region covered by the FTIR. The spectral region is nominally 2.025.0 um with standard I-TIR optics and can be extended to 45 urn with cesium-iodide optics. The SOC-100 uses a 2-n imaging heiniellipsoid to diffusely illuminate the sample with a 700 °C blackbody. A moveable overhead mirror captures the energy reflected at an angle and directs a collimated beam into the FTIR. Because the ellipsoid images the diffuse blackbody source onto the sample, energy throughput is maximized and polarized measurements can be taken in the far IR. Surface Optics H 4 1 7
The Phi Adept-200 automated depth-profiling tool uses dynamic SIMS to measure the distribution of dopants for shallow (100 eV)) medium (keV), and deep (MeV) implants. The stage offers fullX, Y travel for access to all points on a 200-mm wafer. Physical Electronics • 420
