New Reference Format for Chemistry of Materials Inclusion of Titles and Page Range in All Citations

W

e realize that reference formats are not on the top of everyone’s list of most exciting discussion topics, but citations serve as the foundation of every scientific manuscript. In order to align ourselves with the majority of ACS journals, we are going to include the full titles of the cited paper in the references, as well as the full page range of the citation (Figure 1). Having the paper title in the reference is extremely useful for readers, reviewers, and editors, and thus we will now request this information in every revision and new submission as of May 15, 2015. Our format will look as follows: Publications: (1) Mann, A. K. P.; Skrabalak, S. E. Synthesis of SingleCrystalline Nanoplates by Spray Pyrolysis: A Metathesis Route to Bi2O6. Chem. Mater. 2011, 23, 1017−1022. Books: (2) McQuarrie, D. A. Statistical Mechanics; University Science Books: Sausalito, CA, 2000. Edited books: (3) Wong, K. T.; Bent, S. F. In Functionalization of Semiconductor Surfaces; Tao, F., Bernasek, S. L., Eds.; Wiley: Hoboken, NJ, 2012; Chapter 5, pp 89−103. Theses: (4) Li, D. Nanoscale Phase Segregation of Block Copolymers on Surfaces for Nanopatterning Applications. Ph.D. Thesis, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, 2012. Papers published online or in-press: (5) Yu, K.; Carter, E. A. A Strategy to Stabilize Kesterite CZTS for High-Performance Solar Cells. Chem. Mater. 2015, DOI: 10.1021/acs.chemmater.5b00172. There will only be one citation per reference number. We are working with Endnote, Zotero, Thomson-Reuters, and others to update their style preferences. As authors ourselves, we understand that this change may lead to short-term inconvenience, but the value of being able to quickly scan reference titles is too important to ignore. Thank you, authors, for your patience during this transition.
