fully fluorinated alcohols b u t are e x pected to be less expensive to make. Telomerizing tetrafluoroethylene i n an excess of methanol at 80° -to 200° C., Donald R. Baer of D u P o r t ' s Jackson Laboratory told the Division o f Industrial a n d Engineering Chemistry, yields a mixture of fluorinated alcohols directly. Chain lengths vary from C 3 t o C 1 3 for some 909c of the reaction products. Lower members of t h e series a_re good solvents for some polymers, while the longer chained members—containing from seven to 13 carbons—look b e s t as intermediates, Baer told a Symposium on Fluorine Chemistry. • W h e r e They May G o . Some d e rivatives of these omega hydrogen fluoroalcohols have properties similar t o those of their perfluorinated cousins— sometimes n o t quite as effective but a good bit less costly, Baer points out. Alkali metal and ammonium salts of C 7 and higher acids made from the alcohols are good surfactants. Tlxey give wetting, dispersing, and emulsifying actions while remaining relatively stable chemically. For example, tlxey are not attacked b y free radical initiators, Baer declares. Surface tension of water can be lowered considerably by alkyl esters of t h e alcohols—made b y reaction with phosphorus oxychloride or phosphorus pentoxide. Esters of the acids have been -examined at length for high temperature lubrication. Among t h e best derivatives for this purpose: C 5 , C7, C 9 fluoroalcohol camphorates and cyanurates. T h e latter can be distilled at 350 t o 400° C. without decomposing.

stabilizer. Another, 3,4-epoxycylohexylmethyl 9,10,12,13-diepoxystearate, is loaded with epoxy groups. Mullins says it combines low volatility, good compatibility, and heat- and light-stabilizing ability with fair lowtemperature performance; it should prove a good auxiliary plasticizer to carry the full load of stabilization. T h e symposium concensus is t h a t the more promising of these cyclohexene oxide derivatives should find wide use eventually—particularly in applications where inadequate resistance to heat and sunlight have been problems. This could mean even more u s e for PVC resins in agricultural goods, protective coverings, and coatings. Look for commercial developments in the near future as these go from t h e lab bench to pilot plant.
New Carbamate for Killing Bugs Carbide's Sevin is not only highly toxic to many insects but is also s a f e to humans A n e w broadspectrum insecticide holds promise for use against Agricvrrvral & more than 3 5 difFood Chemistry ferent insects. It's the carbamate pesticide, Sevin, developed by Union Carbide Chemicals. Known chemically as 1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate and previously called experimental insecticide 7744, the material is reported to be unusually safe to humans. L a b a n d large-scale field testing of this compound has been u n d e r way for the past four years. Currently, Sevin is in the development stage of testing in agricultural experiment stations. Next year, it is expected to b e available for grower trials. Studies to date indicate that Sevin controls insects t h a t attack cotton, fruit, tobacco, vegetables, and citrus. Joseph A. Lambrech of Carbide told t h e Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry that the n e w material is particularly effective against resistant strains of codling moth and pink bollworm. Sevin, h e says, provides good residual control of codling moth w h e n apple trees are sprayed at 10- to 14-day in1 Q 9 NATIONAL I W i i MEETING
C0RS0N-CERVENY MICRO BELLOWS PUMP Feeds Chemicals in Esso Research Bench Scale Pilot Plant In setting up its bench scale pilot plant to solve many problems involving simple, continuous, or vacuum distillation, solvent extraction, or chemical reaction, Esso Research & Engineering have installed a Corson-Cerveny Micro Bellows Pump to pump a wide variety o f chemicals. The Corson-Cerveny Pump is used in many laboratories where corrosive chemicals are pumped because all parts in contact with the liquid are made of stainless steel, and cone-to-taper fittings eliminate the need for packing, which is always a source of possible contamination. Why not let the Corson-Cerveny Pump help in your laboratories? Write for bulletin and prices.
