News & Announcements News from Journal House Resources for Using Periodic Table Live! (PTL!)
Donating Old JCE Issues: Why Do It? The Journal staff often calls your attention to the fact that many JCE readers and some institutional libraries are on the lookout for Journal collections. These become available because of retirements, switching to all electronic media, and sometimes just a good housecleaning. If you are wondering if anyone out there might be interested in your collection, read on! Erica Jacobsen of our staff recently received this email message. Dear Erica, I just wanted to thank you for your help in the transfer of Mr. Silberman’s collection of JCE. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting him and speaking to him about the Journal issues, his work as a chemistry educator and author as well as his retirement work at the Sciencenter in Ithaca. The Journals will be used by any of the 17 science teachers in my department at Binghamton High School, as well as several teachers in neighboring districts that I collaborate with.
Guidelines for Reviewing Books and Media The Journal is always in need of reviewers of books and media. If you are interested, but would like more information about how the process works, we have prepared a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about book and media reviews, which you will find on the online supporting material.
Awards Announced Excellence in High School Teaching Awards The 2009 winner of the ACS Division of Chemical Education Northwest Region Award for Excellence in High School Teaching is Paul Phillips. He is shown receiving the award plaque from Janan Hayes, representing the ACS at the recent NORM meeting. Phillips teaches at Capital High School in Helena, Montana.

After reading through this issue of the Journal you are probably getting excited about all the resources available to help you teach about the periodic table of the elements. The Chemical Education Digital Library wants to share another new resource with you. If you head over to the ChemEd Courses (http://moodle.chemeddl.org/) you’ll notice a new, open enrollment course titled “Using the Periodic Table Live! in your classroom”. This course currently provides you with six worksheets to use with your students in the PTL!. These worksheets cover a variety of topics, focusing on Periodic Trends like atomic radius and electronegativity. But you can also find a worksheet that teaches your students about carbon and one that allows you or your students to choose an element and explore that element in detail using the PTL!. There are also answer sheets available for most of the worksheets but we’re currently working on the best way to get those into your hands and keep them out of the hands of your students! Check back periodically to see updates and new worksheets.

Courses, Seminars, Meetings, Opportunities Plan Ahead: ChemEd 2011 The conference organizers have announced that ChemEd 2011 will be in Kalamazoo, Michigan, July 24–28, 2011, at Western Michigan University. The conference is returning to the Midwest for the first time in 10 years. The planners promise beautiful surroundings, loads of workshops and demos, a series of “Chemistry Of…” lectures, several tours, and a conference closing at the Air Zoo and Space Museum. Visit http://www. chemed2011.com (accessed Aug 2009) for more information. Plan to attend now!
Thanks again! Barbara LaBarre
Let us help your collection find a good home! If you have a collection to donate, please contact Erica Jacobsen at jacobsen@ chem.wisc.edu with details of the collection, including the years that it covers, whether any individual issues are missing, and where you are located. We can try to find a good home for it. Donors will receive information from JCE about the value of their donated collection that they can use for income tax purposes. If you are looking for a collection, a list of available collections is maintained at http://www.jce.divched.org/HS/

Green Chemistry Program: EPA Looking for Student Interns The United States Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, DC has openings for up to four undergraduate student interns to join its Green Chemistry Program during the month of January 2010. The position is volunteer, not paid, but offers a unique opportunity for training in green chemistry. During December, EPA will receive nominations for the 2010 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards; during January, EPA staff and interns will read all of the nominations, write brief reviews of each nomination, discuss the nominated technologies in multidisciplinary group meetings, and prepare the nominations for the anonymous judging panel convened by the ACS. Because the work is highly technical, interns need to have a strong science background including at least one year of organic chemistry. Interested students should send email to
[email protected] to request the more detailed description of the internship and the application requirements. 92nd Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exposition Report from Hamilton, Ontario Over 2,000 scientists and students attended the 92nd Canadian Chemistry Conference (CCC) that was held at the Hamilton Convention Centre in Hamilton, Ontario, from May 30–June 3, 2009, and was sponsored and organized by the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC). The program of the Chemical Education Division (CED), organized by Pippa Lock of McMaster University, consisted of eight symposia covering a diverse range of topics, including teaching faculty, interactive classroom engagement, laboratory innovations, Canadian national chemistry learning outcomes, technological tools, and teaching strategies and best practices. Among the invited speakers from Div CHED were Mort Hoffman (Boston University), Paul Kelter (Northern Illinois University), and Tyson Miller (University of Connecticut). The Conference of College Chemistry Canada (C3), which is the Canadian equivalent of 2YC3, was held in Centennial College in Scarborough, Ontario just prior to the CCC. The theme was “A Better World Through Chemistry.” Participants had access to both events. The 2009 Chemical Institute of Canada Award for Chemical Education was presented to Normand Voyer (Département de chimie, Université Laval, Quebéc). CED presented the 2009
Clara Benson Award, given in recognition of a distinguished contribution to chemistry by a woman while working in Canada, to Molly Shoichet (University of Toronto). Awards were given to other undergraduates and graduate students for the quality of their presentations and posters. For those who plan ahead, future CCC’s are in these cities: Toronto, Ontario (May 29–June 2, 2010); Montréal, Quebéc ( June 6–10, 2011); Calgary, Alberta (May 26–30, 2012). QuestBridge College Admission and Scholarship Opportunities The QuestBridge National College Match helps outstanding low-income high school seniors to gain admission and full four-year scholarships to some of the nation’s leading colleges. Students who have achieved academic excellence in the face of economic challenges are encouraged to apply at http://www. questbridge.org (accessed Aug 2009). QuestBridge works with selective colleges that are actively seeking high-achieving students regardless of family income. Some top-ranked colleges offer generous financial aid packages that cover 100% of demonstrated financial need, making them very affordable for students from low-income backgrounds. In 2008, more than 1,000 QuestBridge applicants were admitted to our partner colleges with generous financial aid worth over $100 million; 260 of these students received College Match scholarships covering the following costs: Full cost of tuition (up to $40,000 per year) Full cost of room and board (up to $15,000 per year)
Most QuestBridge partner colleges also include the cost of books and travel in their scholarship packages and automatically renew the scholarship for all four years of college. All College Match scholarships are loan-free. A list of the 25 partner universities and colleges may be found on the QuestBridge Web site. QuestBridge also offers the complementary Quest for Excellence Awards, which include laptop computers, expense-paid visits to partner colleges, and career mentoring opportunities. Applications for both programs are available free of charge on the Web site; completed applications for both programs are due September 30, 2009.
