News & Announcements News from Journal House News from the Chemistry Education Digital Library Webinar on Water: Not Too Late To Check It Out In D e c e m b e r 2 0 0 8 , ChemEd DL broadcast a highly successful Web seminar on water. Sixty-five educators from 23 states and Malaysia participated in this live Webinar event. John Moore and Lynn Diener introduced resources available in the ChemEd DL collection (http://www.chemeddl.org/). Highlights included using Molecules 360 to rotate the water molecule and observe the dipole moment; using Periodic Table Live! to learn more about the discovery and physical properties of hydrogen and oxygen; viewing videos from Chemistry Comes Alive! and the Middle School Portal; reviewing the recently published Tested Demonstration, Stilling Waves with Ordered Molecular Monolayers (JCE August 2008, p 1064); and surfing Web sites from CSERD (on solubility and intermolecular forces) and the Teachers Domain (on oceans and climate). James Skinner discussed recent, cutting-edge research about the dynamic nature of liquid water and the number of hydrogen bonds per water molecule. He also presented computational simulations and videos. Jon Holmes, Robert Payo, and Jeff Layman provided additional support. The online archives include the presentation slides used at the Webinar, links to related content, and free access to the movies used in the Webinar. The presentation slides include age-appropriate content for K–12 and beyond, videos, suggested activities, in-class demonstrations, sample in-class questions, and more. NSDL in the News A recent article in the journal Science reviewed efforts by the National Science Foundation to help educators find, manage, and manipulate high-quality educational materials for use in the classroom (Mervis, J. Science. 2009, 323, 54). Since 2000, the National Science Digital Library has sought to meet that goal by generating 13 Pathways, including the ChemED DL. (Three other pathways, Middle School Portal, CSERD, and Teachers Domain, were featured in the Webinar described above.) The

article reviews the historical context from the project’s beginning at the end of the 1990s. It also describes the innovation and the impact of the current program. Awards Announced Miller Wins ACS DivCHED Travel Award for 2009 The International Activities Committee is pleased to announce that Tyson A. Miller, a member of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Connecticut, is the recipient of the 2009 ACS DivCHED Travel Award. Miller will be an active contributor to the 3rd International Center for First-Year Undergraduate Chemistry Education Conference being held at Nacional Autónoma de México in Mexico City on May 28–30, 2009. He will communicate information and insights gained at this meeting to the CHED membership through publications, through future conference presentations, and by postings on the CHED Web site. The DivCHED Travel Awards support a DivCHED member who attends and fully participates in an international chemical education conference held outside the U.S. An applicant must be a full-time college, university, or high school faculty member and a member of the CHED Division. Preference is given to junior and/or under-represented faculty members who have not had the opportunity to attend an international meeting in chemical education. Passer Education Fund

Green Chemistry Conference

Applications are being accepted for grants supported by The Dorothy and Moses Passer Education Fund. This Fund was established by a generous donation of Dorothy and Moses Passer. Moses (Mike) Passer was for many years the head of the ACS Education Division. The Fund supports grants to provide support for teachers in programs at two- and four-year colleges or universities that do not have any advanced degree programs in the chemical sciences. The awards are to support continuing education activities that must be directly related to the applicant’s teaching and must take them away from their campus. The applicant must be a full time faculty member at his or her institution. Applications are reviewed by a committee. There is no application form but the application must include a description of the proposed activity and how it relates to his/her teaching with dates, locations, titles, and contacts; a brief description of the applicant’s institution and department; a short curriculum vitae; an itemized estimate of expenses, amount of aid requested, and sources of all supplemental funds. No support will be given for general attendance at national, regional, or local ACS meetings nor for any sabbatical support. Closing dates are three times each year: January 1, April 1, and September 1. All applications must be received electronically. AIChE’s Institute for Sustainability announces the First International Congress on Sustainability Science and Engineering (ICOSSE). The Congress will be held in Cincinnati, OH, August 9–13, 2009, and will address the multidisciplinary nature of industrial sustainability along the supply chain. The Congress is cosponsored by EPA, NSF, NIST, University of Kentucky, and AIChE Sustainable Engineering Forum; it is supported by ASME, ACS Green Chemistry Institute, and IChemE. QuestBridge, http://www.questbridge.org (accessed Feb 2009), announces its expanded 2009 scholarship program, which will help more than 1,000 outstanding low-income high school juniors compete for admission to top-ranked colleges. The College Prep Scholarship allows students to access many

POGIL Workshops, Summer 2009 The Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning in the Classroom and Laboratory (POGIL) program announces its workshop program for summer 2009. Most of the POGIL summer workshops are three days. They provide an opportunity for faculty with diverse backgrounds and experiences to learn more about the program and its implementation. They are designed, through a combination of parallel and plenary sessions, to be valuable to a full range of interested people—from those with little or no prior experience with POGIL to those who are experienced implementers. Participants with relatively little experience or knowledge of POGIL will learn the basics of its pedagogy and philosophy, including an introduction to classroom facilitation and activity structure and design. Typical workshop components include:

may be added. The POGIL program is supported by the NSF CCLI program. The workshop schedule for summer 2009 as well as other information may be found at http://www.pogil.org (accessed Feb 2009). New Opportunities from Vernier Vernier Software & Technology has a variety of new oppor­ tunities for educators, both equipment and workshops. Workshops, Summer 2009 Science and math educators can learn techniques for teaching scientific exploration, both in and out of the classroom, by attending one of Vernier’s free hands-on workshops. Attendees will learn how to integrate computers and the Vernier LabQuest handheld data-collection device into any science or math curriculum. At the four-hour sessions trainers and attendees will explore using data-collection technology to enhance learning in chemistry, biology, physics, math, middle school science, physical science, or Earth science classroom. Participants will collect the data using LabQuest, a data collection tool that can be used both in the lab and out in the field, thus enabling real-world applications of science. Workshops are scheduled in a variety of locations across the U.S. for the months of March–May. Each workshop includes lunch or dinner and a training manual and will be led by a current or former classroom science or math teacher. New Probes Available There are three new probes that are compatible with Vernier’s LabQuest data-collection device: GPS Sensor, Wide-Range Temperature Probe, and Power Amplifier. When connected to LabQuest, all three enable students to view and analyze data in a meter, data table, or graph mode. New: LabQuest Library There is a new Web-based application from Vernier: LabQuest Library, which gives teachers the liberty to customize lab instructions stored on their classroom set of LabQuests. The Library contains two applications: Lab Creator and Lab Organizer. More information about both may be found at http:// www.vernier.com/mylabquest (accessed Feb 2009). Lab Creator enables educators to create lab instructions either from scratch or by using a Vernier template and then downloading that experiment to a LabQuest. Text files of Vernier lab books may be copied and pasted into Lab Creator and then tailored to suit a personal teaching style. Lab Organizer will make more than 400 labs available in a searchable format and downloadable to the LabQuest. Teachers can then create custom sets of labs for groups of students.

Science Buddies Web Site: Online Tools, Mentoring It is possible for school kids to connect with professional scientists on the Science Buddies Web site at http://www.sciencebuddies.org (accessed Feb 2009). Science Buddies, a winner of the Parents’ Choice Recommended award, is a non-commercial resource for K–12 student science fair participants. It combines free Web-based tools with an Ask the Expert feature and an online network of scientists, college students, and high school seniors who help kids develop and execute science projects. Science Buddies is the recent recipient of a grant from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, which enhances the chemistry area of the site, now the second most popular area. 2009 Youth Slam: A STEM Leadership Academy for Blind and Low-Vision High School Students The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) and the associated Jernigan Institute will present a dynamic five-day summer camp that aims to engage, inspire, and encourage blind and lowvision (BLV) high school students to consider science-related careers. Two-hundred students from around the country will converge at the University of Maryland, College Park campus from July 26 to August 1, 2009. The program will offer hands-on science activities that are designed to build confidence, encourage independence, and increase science literacy. Students will also participate in workshops about leadership, career preparation, social issues, and blindness. There will be time to mingle and socialize around activities such as karaoke, a talent show, a recreation night, and a dance. The week will culminate in a march and rally in Washington, DC. A college-educated BLV working professional interacts with a group of three students as they participate in the activities during the camp. The mentor and students form a group that attends the same programs together. These activities are run by NASA scientists, students and professionals from the University of Maryland, and NFB staff members.
