News and Announcements Intensive Workshop on Foaming & Anti-Foaming: Surface Chemistry in Action! October 6-7,1994. The Center for Surface Science and Engineering at the University of Florida was established by the Board of Regents of the State University System as an interdisciplinary Center for Surface Science and Engineering in January 1985. As one of its activities, the Center has planned an Intensive Workshop on foaming and antifoaming and the Annual Lecture in Surface Science (given by Professor Jacob Israelachvili, UCSB) fQrindustrial R & D managers, scientists, engineers, and technical staff. This will be presented on October 6-7, 1994, a t the University of Florida. The workshop is organized to facilitate the communication between the leading academic researchers and the industrial research community. The present workshop will cover topics such as foamability, foam stability, microstructure of foam, surface rheology, thin liquid films, and antifoaming in relation to various technologies. The relevance of micelle stability and lifetime to various foaming processes will be discussed. The Workshop fee is $450.00. Please send your Registration Form with check payable to UF Center for Surface Science & Engineering to the followingaddress by September 5,1994. For registration after that date, add $100: Professor Dinesh 0. Shah, Director, Center for Surface Science & Engineering, 419 Chemical Engineering Building, University of Florida, P.O. The 18th Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society will be held at the Crystal Sands Resort, Hilton Head Island, SC. The program this year will be expanded to include parallel sessions on Monday and Tuesday in addition to a poster session. Although there is no attempt to restrict topics for presentations, the following areas of Adhesion Science will be emphasized. New Materials for Coatings and Adhesives: Novel coating and adhesive materials, novel synthetic methods for preparing polymers for coatings and adhesives, novel chemical functionality for adhesion-producing interactions at interphases, structure1 processlperformance relationships. SpecialTopics in Adhesion Sciences: Papers are being called for special topics sessions on bioadhesion, pressure sensitive adhesion, adhesion processes in microelectronics (especially), ceramidmetal adhesion, and small particle adhesion. ChemicaVPhysical Characterizationof Adhesion-Producing Interactions at Inter-

phases: Molecular and vibrational spectroscopy of adhesion-producing interfacial processes, novel techniques for the characterization of interfaces, including new developments in NMR, time-of-flight SIMS, IR, Raman and XPS. Durability-Environmentally Induced Adhesion Reduction in Coatings and Adhesives: Mechanistic studies directed toward understanding the effects of such exposures as moisture, heat, mechanical loading, etc. on adhesion; developments on new test methods that more accurately simulate in-service adhesion loss processes; effects of UV exposure on coating adhesion; adhesion reduction chemistry associated with the corrosion of light weight metal substrates like aluminum. Modeling of Adhesion Process: Theoretical modeling of adhesion forming processes including semiempirical and ab initio molecular orbital calculations, molecular dynamic calculations, Monte Carlo, and thermodynamic calculations. Mechanical Characterizationof Coating Adhesive-Substrate Interphase: Mechanical characterization of interfaces; topographidgeometric characterization of surfaces-physical characterization of surface roughness; controlled roughening for adhesion promotion. General Papers: All aspects of adhesion science. Authors wishing to present either an oral or poster paper should submit a 200-300 word (one-page) abstract to the program chairman by September 1,1994. Authors may request to present papers in either the oral or poster sessions. However, because of space and time limitations, some authors may be asked to change formats. In no case will the requested format of a paper be changed without notification of the author. Authors will be informed as to the status of their papers on or about October 1, 1994. A three-page extended abstract will be required by December 1,1994, for all papers that are to be presented at the meeting. Special paper and instructions for preparing extended abstracts will be mailed to the authors whose papers are accepted for presentation. Persons interested in submitting an abstract or obtaining further information should contact the program chairman, Joseph w. Holubka, Ford Motor Company, Ford Research Company, MD 3198 SRL, P.O. Second International Symposium on Surface Heterogeneity Effects in Adsorption and Catalysis on Solids, Poland-Slovakia. The fact that the surfaces of real solids are geometrically heterogeneous is now generally recognized. Hundreds of papers have been published containing strong evidence that surface energetic heterogeneity is one of the most important factors affecting fluid/solid interfaces. The scientists working on this phenomenon have expressed the need for a meeting devoted to this problem as a forum for intensive exchange of ideas. Consequently, several dozen participants and accompanying persons assembled at the first symposium held in Poland in 1992. The success ofthe first meeting made us plan a second symposium that will start on September 4, 1995, in Zakopane in the Polish part of the Tatra Mountains. After 3 days, the participants will be transported by

This will include registration fee, accommodation, meals, and transportation from and to Cracow. There will be a social and touristic program for accompanying persons. Attendance will be limited to approximately 150 participants and guests. The contributions will be published in Langmuir after the normal reviewing process. Topics for Discussion: experimental evidence of the surface heterogeneity of the real solids; studies of surface defects and their role in adsorption and catalysis in the case of highly organized surfaces; modeling of the formation of the real heterogeneous solid surfaces; the relation between the fractal features of the actual solids and their energetic heterogeneity for adsorption; analytical approaches and computer simulations of adsorption on porous heterogeneous surfaces with special emphasis on adsorption by porous carbons and zeolites; surface heterogeneity effects in mixed-gas adsorption; the effects of surface heterogeneity upon adsorptioddesorption kinetics, surface diffusion, and sorption by porous adsorbents; surface heterogeneity effectsin simple and complexion adsorption at the oxidel electrolyte interface; experimental evidence of surface heterogeneity effects in catalysis on solids; kinetic formulations of reaction rate expressions; the effects of surface heterogeneity in catalyst selectivity; the synthetic design of heterogeneous adsorbents and catalysts. One- or two-page abstracts of proposed contributions should be sent to Professor Wladyslaw Rudzinski, Department of Theoretical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, UMCS, 20-031Lublin, Poland, Tel(48)-81-375633, FAX (48)-81-33669, E-mail THEORl@PLUMCSll.
