The Amersham Pharmacia Biotech & Science Prize for Young Scientists has been established to provide support to scientists at the beginning of their careers. In 2000 the prize will recognize outstanding graduate students in molecular biology, from all regions of the world. This international prize will be awarded for the most outstanding thesis in the general area of molecular biology as described in a 1000-word essay. The grand prize winner will receive $25,000 and have his or her essay published in Science. Regional award winners will receive $5,000 and their essays will appear in Science Online. Entrants must have been awarded their Ph.D. between January 1 and December 31, 1999. The deadline for entries is June 30, 2000. For full information contact Young Scientist Prize Selection Committee, Science, 1200 New York Avenue, NW, Room 1053, Washington, DC 20005 or consult the information on the Web site http://www.sciencemag.org/ feature/data/pharmacia/prize/apbprize.shl. The Journal Goes to the BCCE Read the announcement on pp 697–698 about the 16th BCCE to be held in summer 2000 and you will learn that Monday, July 31, is The Day of the Ice Cream Social. The sponsors of this social event (to be held following the evening demo program) are 2YC3 and JCE. We hope to make this a venue for meeting new people, especially newcomers to the conference. And of course there will be ice cream and toppings, custom dipped by 2YC3 officers and members as well as Journal editors and staff; it has been rumored that some list experience as soda jerks on their résumé! The Journal will have a booth in the exhibit area. Be sure to stop by and check out our newest video. We will even give you guidance about building it into PowerPoint presentations.

Mathematics on the Web The first-ever MathML conference, “MathML and Math on the Web,” will be held October 20–21, 2000 on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The conference will present current research and applications involving MathML, an XML application for describing mathematical notation and capturing both its structure and its content. The primary goal of MathML is to enable mathematics to be served, received, and processed on the World Wide Web, just as HTML has enabled this functionality for text. Authors are requested to submit abstracts of proposed talks by email to
[email protected]. The deadline for submission of abstracts is June 2, 2000. Notification of acceptances will be sent out on or before June 23, 2000. “MathML and Math on the Web” is being sponsored by Wolfram Research, IBM, the American Mathematical Society (AMS), Waterloo Maple, and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Additional conference details as well as submission guidelines are available at www.mathmlconference.org or from
