Information Centers and Services Conference The Engineering Foundation is presenting a conference on the topic of “The Technology, Management, and Economics of Information Centers and Services” which will be held at Tidewater Inn, Easton, Maryland, from August 29 through September 3, 1976. The conference will be organized by John E. Creps, Jr., Engineering Index, Inc., and Robert McSpadden Mason, Metrics, Inc., of the Georgia Institute of Technology. The purpose of the conference will be to improve the planning and management functions in the delivery of information services. The conference is intended as an opportunity for researchers and managers to exchange ideas on current practices and concepts and to participate the impacts of likely technological developments in information transfer. Information Retrieval and Dynamic Library Processing A one-week short coiirse on “Information Retrieval and Dynamic Library Processing” will be held at Cornel1 University from June 21 to June 25, 1976. The course covers topics in modern library processing that are not generally covered in standard library school curricula or in other special programs addressed to librarians and information scientists. The text for the course will be “Dynamic Information and Library Processing”, Prentice-Hall, 1975. The course will cover automatic indexing and document analysis, automatic thesaurus construction, automatic file organization, search methodology for large files, interactive information retrieval, and future library organization for mechanized processing. ‘Thecourse will be given by Professor Gerard Salton. NSF Grant to BIOSIS The National Science Foundation has awarded a grant to Biosciences Information Service of Biological Abstracts (BIOSIS) for a joint study by BIOSIS, Chemical Abstracts Service, and Engineering Index, Inc., of the suitability and effectiveness of various instructional media in educating several
types of audiences in the value and use of scientific and technical information. The study is the first phase of a program to develop, produce, and test innovative instructional media to increase user awareness of available scientific and technical information resources and enhance user ability to acquire and apply these resources. Four types of audiences will be studied under the grant: end users of scientific and technical information, educators, managers, and “information intermediaries” such as reference librarians and information scientists. These audience groups will be represented in the study by a user media panel, whose members will review and evaluate various printed, audio, and visual instructional materials developed by the three participating services and other organizations. Arthur W. Elias, Director for Professional Services a t BIOSIS, is principal investigator for the study. Media specialists from the Ohio State University Research Foundation, under the leadership of George W. Tressel, are serving as media consultants. Dr. Carol Ganz of the Office of Science Information Service User Requirements Program is the National Science Foundation’s project officer for the study.
Engineering Index Annual for 1975 The Engineering Index Annual for 1975 (Volume 74) contains over 89,000 abstracts/citations and an index of the world’s significant engineering literature and conferences. Designed to facilitate retrospective search, these items that were published in the twelve issues of The Engineering Index Monthly for 1975 are thereby interfiled in one comprehensive annual set. Over 2,000 various technical publications are selected as the primary sources for coverage in this work. Published as a 6,300-page hard cover volume, three indexes furnish access via: (1) Subject Heading Index-all abstracts and citations are displayed in a continuous series and are arranged alphabetically by over 12,000 main subject headings and subheadings; (2) Author Index-approximately 125,000 authors are listed; (3) Author Affiliation Index-newly incorporated into this volume this year. The subscription rate of The Engineering Index Annual for 1975 is $335.00. A Microfilm Edition is also available for $360.00 and is scheduled for release in April 1976 by Engineering Index, Inc., 345 East 47th St., New York, N.Y. 10017. COBOL Program Conversion The National Bureau of Standards (NBS) has issued aids to assist in the design and conversion of programs that are to be compiled in accordance with the revised 1974 COBOL standard (FIPS PUB 21-l), the Federal adoption of American National Standard COBOL (X3.23-1974). The NBS publication, designated Federal Information Processing Standard Publication (FIPS PUB) 43, contains a detailed listing of COBOL language additions, deletions, and changes and a side-by-side comparison of language elements in the earlier version of the standard (FIPS 21-X3.23-1968) and the 1974 standard COBOL. The aids were developed by an interagency task group on COBOL (FIPS Task Group 9) as a means of informing COBOL users of the differences between the two versions of the COBOL standard and as a handy reference in coverting

existing COBOL programs for use with compilers conforming to the revised specifications. IS1 Library Grant Program The Institute for Scientific Information" ( I S P ) program of grants which assists small libraries in improving their reference services will be continued and expanded in 1976. More than $225,000 is expected to be awarded this year toward the purchase of IS1 indexes to the journal literature. For libraries that qualify, the program provides ~ WofOthe purchase price for two of ISI's major indexing services: The Science Citation Index", a reference tool that covers nearly 2,600 of the world's more important journals in the natural, physical, and biomedical sciences; and the Social Sciences Citation IndexTM,which covers over 1,400 of the more important journals in the social sciences disciplines.
Both the Science Citation Index and the Social Sciences Citation Index are totally integrated literature search systems. Each employs a variety of indexing techniques including title-word, author, organization, and citation indexing. New categories of libraries eligible to apply for grants in 1976 include those in schools of osteopathy, chiropractic, and podiatry as well as those in small nonacademic research organizations. Categories of libraries eligible to receive both types of grants have been expanded to include libraries in schools of nursing, veterinary science, dentistry, and pharmacy as well as in municipal, state and public libraries. The grant program continues under the direction of Dr. M. V. Malin, Vice President-Corporate Development for ISI, who formerly served as a grant administrator at the National Science Foundation. Those wishing application forms should write to the Grant Administrator, Institute for Scientific Information, 325 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, Pa. 19106. The reference services being provided through the grant program are part of a full line of scientific and technical information services offered by IS1 to libraries, scientific organizations, and individuals in science, eduction, and management.
