Filter

Filters designed for long life when used in fluid catalyst pilot p l a n t installations a r e obtainable from t h e Micro Metallic Corp., 193 Bradford St., Brooklyn 7, Ν . Υ . T h e y a r e fabricated from porous 1 8 - 8 stainless steel a b o u t Ve inch thick in units of lengths from 6 to 54 inches. T h e pres sure drop through the filter elements is claimed to be very low. Even when used with the finest catalyst t h e elements do n o t appear t o plug u p . Continuous

Records

A speed and production recorder an nounced by the Electric T a c h o m e t e r Corp., 22nd a n d Vine Sts., Philadelphia, Pa., is described a s a rugged gear-driven unit electrically operated a n d producing a per m a n e n t record of speed and production when properly installed on any industrial machine. I t consists essentially of a synchronizing contactor which may be attached to and driven b y the prime mover or machine. A step-by-step motor in the recorder is electrically connected to the contactor and follows i t s motion. A steel stylus is driven across a wax-coated chart. C H E M I C A L

Repetition of t h e cycle of operations pro duces a scries of parallel lines, the length of which is proportional t o t h e speed or pro duction. T h e ends of t h e lines form a speed curve. T h e recorder m a y be in stalled in any remote position.

Thermal

System

A single capillary, organic liquid actu ated thermal s y s t e m which is described as particularly a d a p t a b l e t o applications where a small bulb is required, short range intervals are desirable, the manufacturing process is sensitive to mercury, or subzero temperatures a r e encountered is offered by Taylor I n s t r u m e n t Cos., P . O. Box 110, Rochester 1, Ν . Υ. T h e system utilizes a single-bore capillary a n d a single Bourdon spring with a U-shaped bimetallic com pensator on t h e spring for case t e m p e r a t u r e changes. S t a n d a r d charts are used.

Stainless Steel Laboratory Ovens Electric heating, baking, a n d drying ovens of stainless steel a r e suggested by the manufacturer, M o d e r n Electric Labo ratory, 6131 South Wentworth Ave., Chicago, 111., for laboratory testing of coatings, plastics, ceramics, dairy products textiles, pharmaceuticals, paper products, soaps, and other materials as well a s for use in school laboratories. All sizes have interiors of stainless steel. T h e y are easy to keep clean a s well a s corrosion-resisting. Uniform t e m p e r a t u r e is secured from the heavy nichrome element which covers the entire b o t t o m area. T h e interior is 8 inches high in t h e 500-watt size, 12 inches high in the 800-watt, a n d 14 3 / 4 inches high in t h e 1,750-watt. Accuracy a n d response sensitivity a r e claimed to be very high.

Glass-Reinforced Belting and Hose A conveyor belt for h o t materials which is cushioned with rubber a n d strengthened with glass is being manufactured by Hew itt-Robins, I n c . , Buffalo 5, N . Y . A glass-fiber rubber hose which resists acid and gives longer service t h a n standard cotton yarn reinforced hose is also avail able. These developments are claimed to be t h e first such use of Fiberglas reinforce ment.

Demineralizer Higher purity of effluent, lower cost per gallon, and simpler regeneration are claimed for its packaged-unit demineralizers by the Barnstead Still & Sterilizer Co., Inc., 135 Lanesville Terrace, Boston 31, Mass. Improved synthetic resins and flow of the water u p w a r d through the resin beds are said t o increase efficiency. Regenerating time is shortened by elimi nation of backwashing. Installation is sim ple since it is only necessary to connect the units to water supply and waste in order to s t a r t operation.
