NEWS 4 FUEL FURNACE. Battelle Memorial Institute tries out its new skull-type arc-melting furnace on a uranium monocarbide reactor fuel element. In the furnace, contamination of reactive and refractory metals is minimized because metals are melted in watercooled skulls of the same material. Furnace temperatures go to 6000° F.
