Upon entering the Regular Army he joined the Coast Artillery. General Porter served as assistant executive officer in the Office of the Chief of Chemical Warfare Service, assistant commandant of t h e Chemical Warfare School, Edgewood Arsenal, and instructor a n d later director of t h e D e ­ partment of Ground Tactics of t h e Air Corps Tactical School. General Porter was chemical officer of the N i n t h Corps Area, San Francisco, Calif., until 1940 when he was assigned as chemical officer of t h e General Headquarters Air Force, Langley Field, Va. F o r his service during t h e World War, General Porter was awarded the Belgian Order of Leopold.
